I remember a local Councillor once appearing on the show and clearly had no idea who she was dealing with.
I remember it as a bit of a fluff piece, but with an edge, maybe an accident in her ward or something.

She got a bit uppity and very political with Peter.
I stopped what I was doing.
Peter remained unnervingly calm.
I sat down.
She decided to double down and launched into Peter saying he didn't know x, y & z. (It really wasn't that sort of piece)
I turned to stare at the radio.

What came next was a complete evisceration of this woman.
He absolutely destroyed her and everything she said.

T'was glorious!

Sounds like him! Concise, unafraid and razor-sharp - I always felt a bit more learned after listening to him.

I suppose it was around the turn of the century, when the internet was being used more commercially, that I didn't want to look at the R5 website because I'd find out what he looked like. I was happy with how he looked in my head. That's what radio does, isn't it, you form stronger bonds with the voices, the intellect, than you tend to with TV pictures. It's so much more a personal experience. Fi Glover too; I've never quite been able to shake off my attraction to her, simply from her late night voice *sigh*

I always liked Peter Allen, came across as someone you could have a marvellous evening with in a pub.

I’m more ‘right of centre’ than you, over the years a floating voter, but I don’t find R5 leftist at all. For every interview putting a Tory on trial, I hear pretty aggressive interviewing of Labour or Remain figures. EB recently took apart a Labour councillor from Bury who had manipulated primary schools remaining closed ... because he’d lied, continued to lie, she did a deft job. The next article probably picked on the government.

The BBC in general was very much Remain, something (arch Remainer) John Humphries laid bare after his retirement. Some presenters such as Nihal couldn’t contain their bias, but he for example has mellowed.

I'd agree they pick up both elements of the political spectrum but that is part of the problem. They always get someone massively left or right on - in the interests of balance - and then we hear 2 polarised versions of the same debate like a real life Twitter argument neither of which I agree with due to it being devoid of any nuance. Extremes can be easy to pick apart and why they always go for the easy tap in interview.

The lack of consistency does my nut in as well. After weeks of 'Shop your neighbour for going out phone ins' EB in particular hosted one more or less imploring people to take to the streets to support the BLM protest. The whole stay at home, protect the NHS has been forgotten because the cause is worthy. Just imagine what the BBC report would be if that was a pro Brexit march?

Absolutely.

Smart and funny wins every time.

Anna Ptaszynski (thank you Google) is the latest in that long line to steal my heart!!

I wouldn't know where to start, if the google search:-

'Peter Allen turns a woman Councillor inside out' brings up nothing, then I've got nothing.

You’re spot on.

My survival strategy to keep sane through these recent years of political polarisation and hypocritical grandstanding by TV/radio presenters stirring it up, and they can quite easily be destroying Momentum, Labour .... so it cuts both ways .... is, to change channels and listen to music.

Genuinely, the happiest adults I know are those who dip into current affairs briefly each day. Fully aware of Trump and all the issues, but their minds aren’t blown by the maelstrom of political noise.

I sometimes give it a go, it works.

Absolutely.

The happiest people are those that ignore the political whitenoise, or just occasionally have a peak.

Don't get sucked in, there is little anyone can change between their votes.

Best concentrate on controlling what you can control, and enjoying what you can enjoy.

I’m one of many who miss Peter Allen: his insight, balance and challenging style, but above all his sense of fun was never far away.
