4th Officials contribution to a sending off

Vincelot was dismissed against Burnley after the 4th official got involved and told the ref to send him off when everyone else seems to have missed the incident but can anyone remember any another incidents, either involving the Albion or in any other games they have seen, where the 4th official has been solely responsible for a player seeing red?

How unusual is it? Has it happened in an Albion game before?

Possibly unusual, but they are allowed to intervene now apparently. Missed today, but can't believe the Barnes red after seeing it on the BBC. What the f**k.

If the referee got the original decision wrong (which he did) the Barnsley player should have got a straight red for the reaction.

Annoying though it was, it makes perfect sense for the fourth official to intervene. Enough people crap on about the need for technology or an extra pair of eyes. We might as well use them.

Whilst I would agree with that to a point, my problem with the 4th official getting involved, is that they do not spend all the game watching the action.

How many times today was the the official farting around with the managers or taking to the linesmen. The first incident in the north west corner when a Burnley player raised his hands, he was speaking to the security officer and not watching the game, so I think if you are going to allow the 4th offifical to get involved, then it has to be an official who spends 100% watching the action.

Totally agree with Mr Burns. You're either involved or you're not. The 4th official shouldn't pick and choose when he wishes to affect what is happening on the pitch.

Too many other off the ball incidents didn't get followed up on.

The 4th official must have seen it or the linesman. As much as some people on here suspect foul play when a decision goes against us I can't see why he would intervene unless he actually saw it or another official actually saw it.
TBH I didn't see any Burnley player or manager ask for bookings and they seemed as surprised as us at them.

No official can watch the match 100% and the 4th must go through hell with either manager at him every minute. Technology will make this worse, we will have so many interruptions.

At the time and on reflection I think both sending offs were justified and as for the other decisions I can't buy into the worst referee ever either, I suspect Gus might be in a little trouble of encouraging the crowd of clapping the ref.

Burnley were really poor and failed to open us up, even allowing us to come close to snatching a point. I think we would have trounced them if we had 11 men and perhaps we need to look at discipline within the team as our stats are looking bad.

Why should Poyet get in trouble there? I didn't even see him sarcastically applauding, my doing the same was entirely spontaneous as I think was the case for most people. It was just a natural reaction to a mad first half and a (perceived) injustice.

It could be a first if the FA bring a disrepute charge for irony!

Happy Birthday Edna, I assume you are still on the way back from your pub crawl x

Well it happened, and if you can get done for kicking water bottles over in a natural reaction I would have thought it possible to get a fine for dissent. I hope not but lets see.

I don’t have too much of an issue with the fourth official taking action if he sees an incident, my issue is that he did not respond to the incident until he was approached by the Burnley’s Jason Tindall, so he either witnessed it and thought f*** all of it and was influenced by Tindall or didn't see it and was influenced by Tindall, both of which are totally out of order.

Gus definitely started the started the sarcastic clapping of the ref, on a tangent I can only assume that as a child the referee was extremely shit at football and that no bugger would let him join their team, so he decided to become a ref and to seek his revenge that way, because he was utter crap !

The frustrating thing about 4th officials is how they are used. If they are there to add an extra pair of eyes, then they should watch the game 100%, plus not using replays (as they do in rugby) is farcical.

It would also mean that he could watch the Barnes incident again, and then advise on the action to take. (which in my opinion would be equal punishment for Barnes and the Burnley fella).

this is how i saw it. we had an attack out for a goal kick and everyone had taken their positions (a good ten seconds having passed) before the 4th got involved (clearly with a burnley man standing next to him in his ear). the ref should have taken the view that it was unclear and that if any action was required could have been done after the game. it doesn't compare to the zidane incident - because it happened instantly and someone was on the floor having been clearly head butted. no one on the pitch yesterday was complaining or was hurt.
farcical and possibly sets a precedent that we have been punished for.
barnes red is a joke.
and then when you get two decent chances to make amends (noone pen and disallowed goal) oh yes an el abd being assaulted - we get nada.
I hate moaning about the officials - but in a game like that, we have little choice.

Have only seen the Barnes one once on TV, but it looked a reasonable decision to me. Flew in with studs up on both feet - a common dismissal offence. The reaction, however, frorm the Burnley player could well have earned him a yellow at least.

At the time and from side on (north end of east stand) it looked a hard tackle by Barnes and worthy of a yellow. On tv I think it looks less of a bad tackle.

eh...how can u c the barnes sending off as justified?....specsavers please! also he was an awful ref...u push the 2 sending off's to one side..(on eof which was obviously down to the 4th official) he made so so many bizarre decisions...i hav never ever seen a ref so consistently get so many ''minor'' decisions wrong...and never seen a crowd maintain there ''annoyance'' ..he was at times laughable
