47 Years and Still Above Ground

Was buying tickets for myself and AD minimus for the Southend game earlier when I remembered that this weekend marks the 47th anniversary of my first Albion game.

27/8/60 - Bristol Rovers (h): 6-1 (Thorne x4, Jones, Curry), think it was Bill (Hurry) Curry's last goal for the Albion.

Best wishes to the team and all those going to Tranmere on Saturday, my thoughts will be with you. I've fond memories of watching Dennis Burnett playing a stormer there back in the mid-70's, think we won 3-1, but unfortunately the docs at the RSH in Guildford and my family won't let me travel long distances just yet.

Come on Coxy.

Good on yer and hope whatever is keeping you away soon passes. Hopefully you'll be on here on sat afternoon.

Alex dawson was a bit of a hero of mine. Ugly bugger, hard as nails, a real old fashioned centre forward who loved to see keeper and ball in net. For such a big man, although not tall) he was fantastic with his head and those trademark flying headers. Glad you're keeping the memory alive!

dawson....the only man i ever saw who could head a ball from the edge of the box and send ball and keeper both over the line!!!!!!
pity he taught alan duffy how to drink, duffy at his prime(if booze hadn't wrecked his career) would have made peter ward look a donkey.

back in the mid-70's, think we won 3-1

sad stato alert ... that'll be the 76/77 season.

Although I have been going to the Albion for quite a few years less than you - I was more than a decade away from being born in 1960! - I will be travelling on Saturday with a friend who is, I think, onto his 52nd season, or something like that, of following the Albion. And yet, remarkably, this will be his first visit to Prenton Park.

Thanks for your good wishes FG, chemo has nearly finished and they've cut out all the dodgy stuff. Just a question of getting my strength back, keeping my fingers crossed now for the next 3-5 years and hopefully making it to the Falmer opening.

Your memories of Alex Dawson are very similar to mine - I remember one of those trademark headers against Bristol Rovers at Eastville in 1970 (my dad then made us stay for the greyhound racing in the evening!).

For the benefit of younger posters on NSC, Alex was one of the Busby Babes at Man Utd in the 1950's but wasn't involved in the Munich air crash. However, he played in the FA Cup semi final a few weeks later and I believe he is still the only player to have scored a hat-trick in one.

I don't think Alan Duffy needed anyone to teach him how to drink. Interesting comparison with Wardy though - you may have a point here.

I feel young again, hope you both enjoy the day out in Birkenhead!

Sorry to hear you're having to put up with that sort of treatment, Alex, but sure you'll be joining us all again soon.

Alex Dawson the only man who could head a ball harder than most could kick it and the one memory of him that sticks in my mind was the only goal? against Pompey in the cup it was an evening KO and I begrudgingly had to sit in the south stand(normally on the north-east terrace) and the damn thing nearly collapsed when he scored this time with his foot.

Alan Duffy once described as rotund and remember him coming on against Reading and proving all the doubters wrong by coming on and scoring.

great days.
