I would hazard a guess that vB is including bots. Google Analytics excludes them.

i was wondering if it comes from simply not un-counting disconnected users, so just goes up everytime a new session is started. but then saw the "Most users ever online was 23,741, Yesterday at 10:15" which seems rather high.
