Peter Taylor was a genius, but too much of a deep thinker to be a manager in his own right.
Brian Clough tapped into this and added his own enthusiasm and self belief to make himself an icon.
Alan Mullery was a very lucky man to have inherited the Taylor legacy.

I don't think Mullery is given enough credit for the 1976/77 season.

The reason Ian Mellor is cherished amongst Albion fans is because Mullery had the foresight to form the Ward-Mellor partnership by dropping Fred Binney. Mellor didn't do very much in Peter Taylor's two seasons in charge. Mullery also got rid of some of the ageing players in the side, players such as Phil Beal and Joe Kinnear, establishing a young and hungry side, and one that was organised enough to start winning away from home.

Clough's arrival was Year Zero in many respects. It was when it first dawned on us that we could be more than just a bog-standard third division side with occasionally above-average crowds. It is quite acceptable to divide the Albion's history into two eras: BC and AD. Or Before Clough and Always Dreaming to spell them out in full.
