Look at the Inter Milan team , won their last two domestic league titles, had no Italian players playing for them yesterday .................. who are the current World Cup holders ? ..................... Italy . Just because the top 4 clubs in England dont have have many brits doesnt automatically mean the national team should be shit.

Its "fantastic" for Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Its "fantastic" for Scudamore and his permanent stiffy over the FAPL.

But can someone please explain how its "fantastic" for ENGLISH football ? Cos I must be missing something.

personallt speaking, I would much rather see English clubs in European finals. When teh Champions league final is Inter Milan against some other european side I have no interest, however if there is an English club in the final, be it Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or Liverpool then it adds to the experience.

liverpool's performace in the final three years ago against AC milan was one of the best nights I have seen in European football.

I will always support and English side in a european game and dont subscribe to this anti English clubs bollocks as expounded yesterday by Scotty mac.

I suppose its getting old, but when i was a youngster, I was an avid fan of one team having no time for any other, nowadays I can watch many sides and appreciate good play ( I think I must be on my own at Brighton as I very rarely see anyone applaud when a visiting team play well or do a good move or score an excellent goal).

So what was the scapegoat in the 1970s for the England team being dismal instead of foreign players that is used today?

And we were no better in 1986 than we were in 2006. Maybe on paper we were better in 1986 but in fact, we had a better record in the 2006 World Cup.

We're no better or worse then than we are now.

Blaming foreign players being in the league is like blaming immigrants for the country's domestic problems.

Whatever the problems that the England team has, there seem to be long term flaws that have plagued the FA for decades.

England were shite in the 70s because our coaching methods were miles behind the likes of Germany, Holland and Argentina. We were living on past glories in more ways than one.

We're shite in the 00s because we have no strength in depth. Beyond the main core (some of which are perennial underperformers for England), our players don't get regular Champions League experience.

You know, players like Carson, Richards, Campbell, Lescott, Bridge, Barry, Crouch (less so) and Bent... all of whom played in the do-or-die game against Croatia.

This is partly because few English players go abroad (due to £$£ and culture), and partly because there are few Englishment in our top four league teams...

And our coaching methods are still miles behind the rest of the world!

I think it is absolutely brilliant that we have four teams in the last 8.

I dont really care if they fill their teams full of foreign players, Italian and Spanish sides have been doing that for eons and I didnt hear anyone begrudging their sucesses.

Totally disagree there Mr Guffer.

Why is it good to have four teams in the last eight.

The four teams don't represent English football for me. There are hardly any English players!

You should care if they fill their teams with foreigners, it harms the national team, as proved this season.

Not interested in the Chumpions League. It should be a cup competition, like it used to be. Then it mattered.

The fact that Liverpool, who are miles off the pace in their own domestic league, can constantly get this far in the competition tells me all I need to know.

I'd be lying if I said I had no interest in an english club making the Final - I'd definitelty be less interested if it was two foreign-based teams contesting it, and I'll be tuning in to the latter rounds. But its more of a detatched interest now.

I don't find myself pulling for the english team as much as I used to in the past. I just feel absolutely no affiliation with any of the Big 4 any more even though they are supposedly "representing" the english league in Europe. In years gone by I'd wholeheartedly support Liverpool in their European exploits, and I can even remember cheering on Man U against Barcelona in the Cupwinners Cup Final (1991 ?). Now I just find them all nauseating, and whilst I'll watch, I won't really care who wins.

But the problem with that argument is that the really sucessful English club in Europe, ie Liverpool, had a wide variety of players, Scottish, Irish, Welsh as well as a smattering of English players, Hansen, lawrensen, Grobbelaar, Toshack, St john, Dalgleish, Wark, ( I know that is over many years but its only the last few years that these types have been replaced by European and South American players)

Even when Manu won the European Cup, their team was based on a spine of "foreign players"

It does not show the strength of English fooball. It shows the WEALTH of English football and the ability of its major clubs to attract the best players from OTHER countries.

Are England shite tho? On paper we do have a quality national side.

I think a better reason for why we underperform nationally rather than just being "shite" is because players don't give a toss when they're wearing the England shirt. I have my suspicions that the only player who lost any sleep that night against Croatia was the keeper
good point
well presented

the only thing missing from the national side is passion

and pride

which makes TWO things

actually
