4-4-2 or 4-5-1 for Saturday ?

With our lack of strikers at the moment (with Murray's suspension), which formation do you think Gus will go with for Saturday?

The 4-5-1 worked well away last season and it would seem likely that's what will happen (IMO) with Barnes operating on his own up front.

My starting eleven would be :

Poke
Calderon, Painter, El-Abd, Elphick
Bennett, Navarro, Kishishev, Sparrow, Smith
Barnes

Do anyone else agree, or would you go with 4-4-2 and play Harty alongside Barnes?

Certainly will be 4-5-1 as things stand, but why have you moved Painter to CB and pushed Elphick onto the left?

Think it's got to be 4-5-1 Saturday with Murray out

Apologies - the listing was in no particular order - obviously Painter to be LB and Elphick at centre half

Or we sign and play a new striker with Barnes... too early to say TBH...

There's no way Harty will start alongside Barnes on Saturday. Hart played for the reserves yesterday so I think the best he can hope for is a place on the bench. Unless we sign anyone between now and Saturday I think the team will be the same as that for Aberdeen but with El-Abd for Greer:

Poke
Calderon Elphick El-Abd Painter
Sparrow Kishishev Navarro
Bennett Barnes Smith

4-5-1 for me would work well as it did last season.

Murray out

there is no way in a million years it will NOT be 4-5-1/4-3-3.

How can it be 4-3-3 if we don't have Murray?

It will obviously be a 4-5-1, I'd like to see Baz play on the left but most probably be the same team who started against Aberdeen with El-Abd in for Greer

I would say barring any more signings that would be my starting XI and probably Gus'. Smith seemed to play his way into the team at the weekend. Limited players on the bench with only Whing, Dicker and Hart having much experience at this level. Not too worried though as with Greer and Murray due back next Saturday, El Abd and Barnes will drop to the bench and offer more cover.

4-5-1 (4-3-3 variant) is the way forward in football now. Poyet loves it and, frankly, Ferguson, Ancelotti, Wenger all play it. 4-4-2 is dead.
