[Cricket] 3rd Test: West Indies v England at Bridgetown, May 1-5, 2015

That's worked well then...

For all this talk of a 'new team', the decision making around Trott smacks of the worst of the Andy Flower-style autocracy. They like his character, so they pick him regardless of his ability. No-one doubts that he can make runs in the middle order if his heads in the right place, but they've asked him to bat in an unfamiliar position and when his attitude has looked a bit sketchy (as it did in the second innings in the last Test) rather than take him out of the firing line they've persevered with him, and unsurprisingly, given his seemingly scrambled brain he's out for a three ball duck struck by indecision.

For the third time in 5 innings.

Another poor decision from England. Perhaps Alec Stewart will sort them out?

Trott - useless excuse for a cricketer.

Cook and Root didn't hit it off as an opening partnership, well they're basically an opening partnership right now. Could be an interesting period in the match...

I don't get the choice of Trott at all. Even if he made runs, what did that prove? That he can make test runs against an easy attack, how does that help against Johnson and Starc (or even Southee and Boult)? Is Lyth an option? We don't know - unless he's thrust in the deep end in the summer. It was a totally brainless decision.

Root is a class act though and will dig us out of this mess but it doesn't augur well for the summer

I agree...it doesn't augur well.
The selectors have made a fundamental error in recalling Trott. When ' your bottle ' has gone in sport, you are a pale shadow of your former self and the opposition will pounce on any opportunity to inflict more mental anguish. Its painful to watch the disintegration of a once top sportsman but its a hard cruel business and Trott is now a passenger at International level. He cannot cope mentally and therefore his decision-making process is flawed.
He suffered a mental breakdown only a relatively short while ago and yet good old England have thrown him straight back in again. They watched him seemingly rehabilitate in county cricket and thought that was enough. It wasn't. He should never have been allowed to play at Test level again.
If they pick him in the summer it will be like a coconut shy, a rabbit caught in the headlights. The selectors are totally to blame. They should have allowed him the dignity to slowly rebuild his career in the more comforting surroundings of county cricket. Its a staggering display of insensitivity, ignorance and selfishness and they should carry the can for this.
I feel sorry for Trott. He is a good player, who has gone through personal and public turmoil. They have just thrown him to the lions and it is a disgrace.,

Absolutely right. Crazy decision on all levels. The Aussies were never going to be sympathetic to his problems, and he's too fragile to be exposed to them. I really feel for the guy because on top form he was a very good batsmen
