Why are they not that good?

Far more restricted walled garden than Apple - there are a lot of good 'must have' apps missing from the Amazon store, runs on old version Android (with Amazon software on top) and is quite slow and laggy in places by all accounts.

Reasonable value for money, but if I was looking to buy in this price bracket, I'd still go for the Nexus 7.

It's free 3g as well, but I'm fairly confident they disabled the internet browser in them so you can only use it to connect to the store now.

That sounds likely - why on earth would they give you free net when they could charge for it. Giving it to you to make money off you through purchases, makes more sense.

I used my kindle on 3G in Egypt quite a lot last year, not tried it recently on web browser as I found free wifi in most places I have travelled around the world this year.

Amazon seemed to cut off the browsing from time to time whilst in Egypt, I guess due to the high data charges of £15/MB. Browsing on the Kindle is very difficult/awkward, although better than nothing or huge iphone/ipad bills.

Interesting. Most of the early reviews had it pretty much side by side with the Nexus 7. Main ways it fell down were it being a little stuttery (but it was an early view, it's not out yet) and a little bigger/heavier.

I'd agree with that. The nexus is a great tablet for the price, good spec etc. I'm thinking of getting one, my 10 inch Asus tablet whilst good is a bit too big and unwieldy for my liking.

I've got an iPad 2 and a nexus 7 and they are two different beasts entirely. The iPad has much better battery life and will genuinely give you several hours of gaming/movies/internetting. it has apps for everything. Only downside is that it won't fit in a handbag.
The nexus is smaller but you still get another 3-4 hours out of a full charge.
The nexus is far more portable, being only about half the size of the iPad but the screen is about the smallest you would find useable.
It plays movies well and has a nice screen.
If you're not going to load it up with movies or games then the 8 gb should be sufficient,

Went into Currys in Haywards Heath and the chap explained that if I couldn't get a reception through my O2 Dongle I wouldn't get one through a tablet unless the sim was with a different network provider. This would explain why I couldn't get a reception but my daughter in law did on her I pad with Vodafone. To be honest I hadn't thought about needing a sim card from a network provider. It may suit my purpose better to buy another PAYG dongle from Vodafone who my phone is with.

I've found my nexus 7 to be excellent. Very useful around the house when I can't be bothered to turn on the laptop, and good out and about. Does require tethering for 3G though.

An ipad is bigger and sparklier but its also about 3 times the price.

Blackberry playbook - Cheap, well made, and if you can be bothered you can sideload most android apps. Theres quite a lot of blackberry apps available now and for web browsing, email etc its as good as anything.

Have you got a phone with 3g and tethering? I have a acer aspire A500 tablet and tether this to my andriod phone to get online and suprisingly fast, actually seems faster than my phone browsing. The acer a500 is a good solid middle of the road tablet, next to mates ipad the screen looks just as good, easy to use, fast and good features, would recommend it to someone looking for a middle of the road tablet but is better if you have google/android phone. Can pick up secondhand for around £150

One of the family has suggested as a cheaper option to buy a used Ipad 1 that is wif fi friendly and that should do the job and just use unsecured wifi points of which apparently there are plenty about both home and abroad..

There aren't that as many unsecured wifi spots as a few years ago. Most are secured now. It'll be a frustrating experience, as I discovered when I had an iPad with WIFI. I sold it to an NSCer and bought an iPad 1 with 3G and wifi for just £30 more, which is great as I can now be sure of internet if I want it 95% of the time if I'm out of my house, rather than 5% of the time.

Sadly, Blackberry Playbook has no 3G option.

I have a samsung galaxy note which is a phone with a very large screen. My son calls it a phablet! I have it on vodaphone so comes with 3g, wifi and mins plus texts (£20 a month). The screen quality is excellent and I use this more now than my tablet. I thinks its good value and may do the job your after (plus more i.e. GPS SAT NAV which is free on the play store)

The Note is widely referred to as a phablet.

The Note 2 is being released very shortly, so it might be worth waiting if this is the route someone wants to go down.
