So you can only show empathy with a truly horrific situation unless you offer up solutions to the problems that led to that situation (solutions that have been stubbornly eluding numerous governments and agencies for some considerable time).

I'm glad you've made that clear. The next time someone tells me about the death of a loved one from cancer, I'll be sure to include in my response my thoughts on the funding of NHS screening, mechanisms for prioritising medical research and the operation of drug companies, before I move on to the need for more specialist nurses and an increased provision of respite and hospice care. I'm sure it will be appreciated.

How did this get missed by customs, thought all lorries went through the infra red imaging camera to pick stowaways up. Poor people.

You were dismissing very understandable and appropriate expressions of empathy as 'virtue signalling' because those expressing the empathy didn't simultaneously discuss the problems of human trafficking and the exploitation of migrants. I don't think it is a loss to try to rationally asses tragic advents when I have no relationship to those involved .

Rational assessment is fine - essential in fact, to prevent further tragedies. It just isn't mutually exclusive to feeling empathy for the poor souls involved.

Have you actually thought about this case and what those people must have gone through?

1. You are trapped.
2. People around you are dying.
3. You will inevitably die within minutes.

Dehumanising people means you lose all empathy. They are a label, cockroaches she called them (easy to exterminate)
That's why people in camps were given numbers.

These were 39 people who were desperate to leave China (possibly Christians as churches are being closed at the rate of 400 a day, and ministers jailed) or people who couldn't take living under the 'utopia' of Commmunism any more.

Maybe carlzeiss and Diablo should do some reading on Amnesty International to see how some people have to live in this world.
