Curious that Fulham Gate

I know Fulham were riding high,Boxing Day & Johnny Haynes

We actually finished 12th that season

Brighton's 1st season beyond 3rd division - the outcome of the most exhilarating Albion match ever 6-0 destruction of Watford (Adrian Thorne 5) - when only draw required to be Div 3 Sth champs - last game of season k.o. about 6 pm previous balmy April evening (no floodlights) - attended by about 31,000 (tiny little West Stand then!)

Next game - 1st in 2nd division - Middlesbrough 9 Albion 0 (Clough 5)
Return game - Brighton 4 Middlesbrough 6 (Clough 4) - were 5 0 down at one point.

Ahh!!... Almost a different game in those days.

Albion finished the season above Middlesbrough.

Rochdale is third... and there were several thousand outside
Yeah me included. I was about 6-7 people from NS turnstiles when it was closed.. Ending up top of a lamppost and I could only see half the north end of the ground.

Just an aside, but I was at the Fulham game with the record crowd and sat on the running track by the South goal. I think that the considered opinion later was that the crowd was probably nearer 39000 because a load got in without paying by scaling the fences and other dubious methods. The official crowd was those that had paid.

The gates were reduced in the first division due to seating in the south stand and a wider exclusion area between away supporters around the north east corner.

Assume these games were POTG

Apart from the West Stand seats can anyone remember ever buying advanced Goldstone terrace tickets back in the 70s when we had our longest run of big 20-30k attendances? Think I bought a NS ticket for Wardy's (hattrick) England U23 appearance at the Goldstone. Maybe I just can't remember!!

Don't think you could for league games. I remember we were playing a big club in the cup one year and you could buy tickets by going to a reserve game a week or so before. I think 18000 turned up although very few stayed for the match.

Must have been a bit nuts

Norwich FA Cup QF 1983 I thought was bad enough with 28,600. What did the south stand hold when it was a terrace, I guess 5-6k?

The South Stand was never all terrace. Half n’half, old wooden seating at the back and standing at the front. So probably, a conservative estimate, of 500 seated and 2,000 upright. Still, a long, long time ago. :drink:

Yes it was nuts. They put us kids mainly round the running track and we had to sit cross legged so that people standing behind could see. I'm not sure it would be allowed today as we were right in line with Johnny Haines rockets which would have taken someone's head off had they connected. All we could do was duck. I also remember goal kicks, corners and throw-ins were a bit of a challenge as we had to squeeze up to allow them to be taken!

My only other memory was that being Boxing day it was really cold but with so many people squashed together you didn't feel it until my long walk home.

I seem to recall the Ipswich game in the LC (the round before Derby) had a very large crowd but I can't find the numbers anywhere.

You also need to factor in that back in the day the tendency was to surpress the attendance figures, presumably for the taxman whereas in the Barber-era the attendance figures are artificially inflated. Therefore whilst we know that the actual attendances today are lower than the figures put out by the club, it seems fairly reasonable to assume that the attendances for matches at the Goldstone may well have been higher than the published numbers.

Ipswich 26,779

I had to go in the south stand with my dad

Whilst my two older brothers were allowed to go in the North

Jealous or what

The North Stand celebrations were amazing

Fantastic night!

Ipswich were a team off the tele

And we beat them

I can remember buying tickets on a couple of occasions in that era but I can't remember what for. It might have been cup games.... maybe a couple of high profile league matches too, Blackpool, Palace, Saints and Spurs were in high demand.
Pretty sure the Norway U21match would have been tickets as you rightly pointed out.
It always felt like midweek evening matches were the most well attended . Or maybe it was just the excitement of my young eyes

Yes the U21 game was definitely all ticket

Remember having to go to a reserve game to get one

Thousands were there

Can't recall the actual gate for the U21 though?
