It's fitting that this week, the Berlin authorities have told those actors who pose as US soldiers at Checkpoint Charlie to cease & desist. An iconic and historic 'site' has turned into a 'sight' and tacky tourist trap in recent years. Plus also a magnet for scammers looking for gullible tourists. I always advise anyone visiting to head to the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße. A far more informative, poignant and meaningful memorial to the Cold War era.

Very true. I was there yesterday and it's much more informative and much less tacky and commercial.

They used the words 'democratic' and 'socialist' a lot too.

They were aware of the aura surrounding the word "democratic" and hoped that it would attract good publicity, and I dare say that some of the useful idiots in the west believed it -or wanted to believe it, despite all evidence to the contrary. I visited the old East Germany in the spring of 1990, travelling around a lot and it was truly staggering how far it lagged behind the West. Decrepit, grey, and soul-destroying.

West is BEST
Been to Berlin a few times. First time there we went to the Berlin Wall museum. Heartbreaking.
You can also still see the clear architectural difference between East and West from the top of the TV tower.
