3 away fans last night

At last night's match over here between the mighty LASK Linz and Austria Kärnten, there was a grand total of three away fans. This in the Austrian equivalent of the Premier League.

Although not that shocking over here, it got me thinking about terrible away turn-outs at Withdean or the Goldstone Ground.

What's the worst you can remember? Boston United in the JPT?

I cant remember who we were playin but it was a tuesday night game a couple of years ago..Hereford possibly?..the away support was put in the L&G rather than their usual distant stand and I think there was 5 of them at most...one bloke still managed to sing louder than us for long periods.

I remember hearing a caller on Danny Baker who had once been the ONLY away fan at a game after his mate hadn't turned up. He said it was fine until the home fans started singing "he's got no mates" at him.

I've been amongst 9 at a First Division game here, and been on the home side at a Premier Division game where there were 4 that we could see (grounds aren't usually segregated).

Also been in a group of 800+ away fans when the home side managed to muster 100! They withdrew from senior football due to serious financial issues afterwards, I do wonder why...

Away Support

As some of the older folks on here will remember, before the M25 was completed (about 1987), any away game north of London was a pain in the wotsit, as it meant driving through London, which even then, had terrible traffic problems. Even a game at Luton took about 3.5 hours by car or coach, and all coaches used to have a 1st stop at Scratchwood Services at the bottom of the M1 as it had taken so long to get there. I guess many on here have not even seen that service station, as nowadays, when you join the M1 from the M25, you are already miles north of it. Anyway, back in about 1981 or so, we had a game at Stoke in the old 1st Division. By now, all games versus Stoke were pretty boring, with a high number of nil nil draws. To get to Stoke by car would have been a 5 to 6 hour journey - think Carlisle now, so the easiest way to get there was by train. The old Seagull Specials were a thing of the past, but good old Ron Pavey had arranged some cheap group tickets on the Inter City trains out of London. To cut a long story short, at the end of the game, the old Bill had to organise an escort to get us back to the station, as Stoke always had quite a few lads hanging around. After looking at us, and a quick discussion amongst themselves, they decided that it wouild save a lot of manpower if they took us back in their Police minibuses. All they needed was 3 of them, as there were probably less than than 30 of us on the train ! Add on a few people who would have driven, plus some Northern based Seagulls fans, and I guess the away support was less than 50 on a Saturday ! This was not an isolated occurence. A similar thing happened at Sunderland to drive us back to the station to connect with the train to Newwcastle. Looking at the away support now, it is hard to imagine how poor ours was at times. However, a lot of this was geographical, as in those days, a lot of the A23 to the bottom of the M23 was single carriageway, and it just took hours to get anywhere.

Think that was Cheltenham away season before last, I remember they brought 35 fans! Weirdly they'd been to Withdean already that season for the JPT and took many more then!

Lowest Albion away attendance I can remember (though I didn't go) is 87 at a cup match against Swansea - Dirk Lehmann scored.

You are right, it was Cheltenham when we were playing them every week for about a month.

Was it as many as 35?

I remember one boxing day in the late 80's.

we were playing Southend at the Goldstone Ground. we counted 11 away supporters.

i think the game was a boring nil nil so obviously the sarfenders knew something we didn't.

Didnt Lewes take three to Salisbury last year, when Lewes won their only away game of the season?

I thought Boston brought 9 to Withdean one year for a midweek JPT game.

They put them in the South Stand. Or did I imagine that?

Indeed they did. I was talking to a couple of them down the front, I think they were southern based. I think there were 30 odd in the end as they let a few more in who had gone in the home end. But they only officially sold 9 tickets.

I remember playing Sunderland away in 1983, just 3 days after beating Sheffield Wednesday in FA Cup Semi, we had less than 100 at Roker Park. A similar amount had been to Swansea earlier in the season!
