We want to send Scherpen on loan so need a 3rd goalie.

If we get a suitable bid, of course, he will still be sold.

I cannot see the point in us having a third goalkeeper in the squad. Since 2017 in 170+ league matches we have only had the need to play our 2nd goalkeeper for one league match. Having two that will push each other makes sense but the third if ever required to sit on the bench could surely come from the U23's

It’s not many but it’s more than 1. Button played 4 PL games when Ryan went to the Asia Cup in 2019, you could argue that technically Sanchez was still number 2 when he made his debut against Spurs and then Jason Steele played when Sanchez was suspended this season.

Now obviously we’ve only had to use our second choice keeper very very occasionally but having 3 senior keepers is essential. What happens if Steele gets a long term injury? We’d have to go with a kid on the bench and then what happens if Sanchez gets suspended or injured. We either play that inexperienced youngster or hope we could use the emergency keeper rule to bring someone in, that wouldn’t necessarily be as good on the ball as we want. That could throw our whole pattern of play out of shape, put undue pressure on our defenders who haven’t trained much with this new keeper.

With the huge money at stake in the PL having 3 senior keepers makes a lot of sense.

Ipswich fans are not too happy with us recalling Walton it seems. He's been playing well for them and they are accusing us of being heavy handed in negotiation tactics to try to force a higher fee.

But also... we need a third goalie and Walton is already on the books. If Scherpen is a better long-term prospect but needs experience then it makes sense.

To be honest Rushworth seems to me the most likely to be Sanchez's successor in a few years.

Seems a bit harsh on Walton but that is football I guess

You have to feel a bit for Walton. Spent years working his way through loans in the lower leagues, did really well and came back here as Number two to Ryan. Bobby Sanchez was due to go out on loan for the season. Walton was all set to be our number two and was in goal for the preseason Chelsea friendly, with Bobby S on the bench .After about 15 mins Walton got that injury which ruled him out for ages, Sanchez comes off the bench plays a blinder and basically supplants Ryan and Walton has suddenly gone from the heir apparent to surplus to requirements

Personally think it’s been clear for at least a year that Walton has no future with us, which is why it is a bit sad that he’s out on loan, playing regularly , putting himself in the shop window and now been recalled as third choice keeper for 6 months before his contract expires

Walton isn’t coming back to be third choice. He’s coming back so he can be sold.

Pretty much agree, but both Walton and Sanchez were in the bench - Walton came on at half time, flapped horribly, looked very shaky, then pulled himself together, came out and made a good claim only to injure himself in doing so. Dreadful bad luck - although I seem to remember a few of us on here had the feeling that Sanchez might have already edged ahead of him anyway..

Walton isn’t coming back to be third choice. He’s coming back so he can be sold.
Hope so - best outcome all round now, although it might depend on how bad Steele's injury is. Be good if Ipswich can afford him though - he seemed happy there, and they were happy with him. Maybe they'll get him on a free in the summer of he is here as cover for the rest of this seson.

Walton recalled.
Scherpen will go out on loan.
Walton to become no 3 squad goalie unless we get a suitable bid.
Not good news for Walton - or for Ipswich.

Suggestion on the Ipswich forum that if we've recalled Walton so that Scherpen can go out on loan, why not send him to Ipswich to replace Walton? I've heard worse sggestions ..................

Definitely the best thing for their development.
