The mighty Seagulls, beat Liverpool at Anfield 2-1. What a day!!

Seagull Special from Hove station and had to go via Portsmouth if I remember rightly, due to engineering works. Bused from Lime Street to Anfield, and stood in the last section of terracing left, in one corner of the ground.

Will never forget the winner from Case, or the Phil Neal penalty miss.

Got back to Hove station, just in time for last ordrs in the Cliftonville.

I had to watch that game from the Kop -couldn't get in anywhere else. Quite an experience, particularly as Gerry Ryan's goal went in that end and I had to stand grinning from ear to ear without making a sound !

Bloody hell, was it really that long ago? I'm starting to feel old now! If I remember right, that was the first FA Cup game ever played on a Sunday. Admission by team sheet I think. Happy days.

I didn't go but my mate and this brother did, they went by coach which got stoned by the scousers after the game. His brother ended up in hospital and was lucky not to lose a kidney. They were not all gratious in defeat!

I was there too. Probobly the most exciting away match ever. Even better than the semi up at Highbury. In those days Liverpool were considered were THE team in England. Winning European competitions and were considered virtually invinceable at Anfield. We survived the last 20 minutes of non stop pressure, felt like an hour. Marvelous scenes when the whistle blew, about 5/6000 of us there.

It amazes me that despite being a 5th round match on a Sunday there was no TV coverage. I have never seen the goals since, despite it being one of our most famous ever victories. Somebody told me once that the match was filmed on an amatuer camera from the main stand, to be used for Liverpools post match team discussions, and that this was shown once on TVS. Is this true? Anybody else ever seen it?

Quite unbelievable game, they equalised and I thought we were done for as we went straight back up the other end and scored in what seemed like about 20 seconds later. I thought that the match was shown at Hove Town Hall on the day by beamback?? Never met anyone who went so maybe not.

Michael Robinson had one of his best games for us, which probably explains why Liverpool signed him the next season. Personally didn't think he was good enough for the Liverpool team of the time,

If I remeber rightly the game was shown in Sherry's ( ?? ) nightclub a couple of weeks later.

I also think it's on a video of goals somewhere too. I'll have a good look through my collection tonight!

What a day!!!! It even got mentioned in my divorce papers 10 years later as an example of how terrible a husband I was, daring to go to an away game!!!!!!!!!

Yes, on the way back we were told ( on the grapevine??!!??) that the club will play it at Sherry's ( pink coconut ?!) midweek a few days later, we all bowled over there and watched it again, crap quality, but a good day then night nevertheless.

My mate (who was there with me and his young son) was punched in the face on the way out and had his nose broken - but as he said at the time "I bet that bast*rd feels worse than I do right now"

As I remember it was the first time that Liverpool had ever played on a Sunday (for religious reasons??), it was Phil Neals birthday (I never rated him - miserable bugger) and so they made him Captain for the day (no doubt anticipating an easy win as a nice birthday present) they got a penalty, Phil Neal took it and missed by a country mile !!!!!

Oh how we laughed!!!

That's something to be mighty proud of Cadiz! I mean wives are ten a penny, but if you'd have missed the Liverpool game life just wouldn't have been the same.
My Dad took the whole family up in the car that day, it was a Sunday game so I had to forfeit playing for Bevendean Barcelona (who left me on the bench for the rest of the season as a punishment). Because me and my two mates were so small (aged 11), and the Btn end was so RAMMED, our feet couldn't touch the floor so we ended up in the Liverpool seats on the other side of the barrier. Made it all the more sweet especially after the penalty miss (in front of the kop, by Phil Neal who never missed pens). I also remember the Kop giving us and Jimmy Melia a very big ovation at the end. Magic.

On the subject of the TV coverage, I have definitely seen the goals on video. Aren't they of the history of the Albion compilations?
Also, the next year when we played them in the cup and won 2-0 at the Goldstone it was broadcast live on TVS. Does anyone have a video of that one?

I had a video of that 2nd game but lost it in a house move

I ran on the pitch at the end from the West Stand and hugged Terry Connor - live on the telly

Two non-footballing moments stand out in my memory - a huge chorous of "We are Brighton, from the South) a la Rod Stewart (I'd never heard that one before and it still sends a shiver up my spine even now) and half way through the second half when a lone seagull flew over the pitch and our stand. That was an omen; we KNEW it was going to be our day!
