Glasgow to step in and host after Australian state of Victoria had previously pulled out over financial concerns.

In fairness having had 19 sports featured at the last games in Birmingham, the Glasgow games will be scaled back and only have 10 sports, with again Athletics and Swimming two of the main events.

But at least it’s been saved, with Birmingham City Council have effectively gone bankrupt partly due to their event, and the Aussies hoisting the white flag on the back of that and other related issues, the longstanding sporting event continues.

I struggle to see why they bother with it anymore. Unless it breaks even or makes a profit I can't see the value. Feels like a bizarre legacy of when a fifth of the world map was coloured in pink. And, anyway, Australia wins the most Golds and we can't have that.

The really funny part is that the Glasgow games will be majority funded by the people of Victoria!

The ex-premier Daniel Andrews (political leader) of Victoria firstly led the bid for the games, then came up with a really expensive $4.9 billion plan and complicated schedule once they were awarded, and then finally pulled out because it would be too expensive for the state as it is almost broke due to his Labour headed government overspending.

The act of withdrawl come with financial penalties of $380 million which goes to the games organisers, who in turn has passed most of this on to the Glasgow organisers.

Andrews himself has since resigned his office leaving others to pick up the pieces of this fiasco, and other consequences of his calamitous near communist regime.

I’m not bothered about the politics or the history of the Commonwealth Games. I just quite enjoy the actual sport — and I suspect the athletes do too, treating it as a valuable stepping stone in their careers, and an opportunity to compete at a very high level, albeit with probably an even bigger destination in the distance like the Olympics, World Championships etc.

I’m quite keen on Bowls and the Commonwealth Games offers some great competition among the Brits and against Australia, NZ and Canada in particular. So I’m glad it’s been saved even though I don’t yet know if Bowls has survived the reconfigured 2026 version. I hope so.

It's all a big ego trip. The cost of hosting the Olympics was a not small slice in what bankrupted Greece.

Can’t disagree with many of the arguments against keeping the Games. But if they are to continue Bowls should be one of the sports retained as one of the few where people can continue to compete at the highest level well into their twilight years. Mind you, Brighton Council may have a different view with cuts to the budget this year resulting in the closure of local clubs that have provided many decades of exercise and socialisation for residents.
