All very positive I’d say. The biggest downside is the income tax bands not moving again. I still think it’s insane that £50k is the 40% tax band for PAYE given the state of inflation over the past few years, and to keep that in place until 2028 seems even more ridiculous. It’s just another killer to middle income earners. If growth is the intention, then these should’ve risen in line with inflation for me.

But other than that, very sensible.

No the land was purchased etc then scrapped and sold back off. The Hastings bypass is a joke.

If ever I’ve travelled to lovely Rye, all the way back to the early 90’s, I bolt on an extra hour over reasonable expectations, for Polegate to Winchelsea.

She didn’t go after the 3.6m business people who receive dividends.

Armchair lefties had spent a few weeks licking their lips that SME’s would be attacked with much greater taxes.

Imho Reeves acknowledging that they employ 60% of workers, make up over half of the private sector.
Some budgets will never be enough for some people, but this is a very fair and even-handed first budget. The hard left won’t be happy with anything short of hardcore socialist policies, so just ignore them. As I say, the WFA implementation is a bit of a dark cloud, but that today was much better in terms of Reeves establishing Labour’s identity. Sane, dull politics.

I think the markets will like that a lot too, as well as the public.

My Antiques shop is in Rye. Recently a holidaying couple popped into the shop. The chap said he hadn't been to East Sussex for 20 years though he loves the area, then he remembered why, the awful roads.

Most of those on the left were just hoping for a solid and uncontentious, fair budget that started to take the UK into a direction that begins to address some balance between the haves and have nots after 14 years of rich Tories protecting their own and running the country ever deeper into debt.

Nicky Campbell took a call from ‘a very switched on’ limited company one man band the other day, calling for far higher taxes on his business and him. He kind of revealed his numbers, so I was easily able in my head to correct his rubbish summary.

He claimed all in all he pays just 8% tax.

He doesn’t. On his numbers he pays 19% and 8.75% all in.

I was talking to the radio, praying that Campbell had some knowledge.

It was frustrating because listeners were fed a load of bollocks.

Not sure who wrote Rishi's speech, but I think the country voted pretty clearly that it was fed up of austerity-style cutting. That he's berating Reeves for not cutting like he would have is a remarkable lack of awareness.
Indeed.

But before the sides switched ends, the then opposition repeatedly criticised the now opposition that the tax burden had never been higher in the nation’s history.

Labour have just made it higher still.

Of course, the counter argument is we’re now going to get good stuff for all that tax take.

No.

The call was far greater IHT, CGT, some said on Corp Tax, many said on limited company owners.

I follow these things closely, it’s my profession. Many left wing think tanks and left wing economists were the experts on LBC and R5 in recent weeks. They smugly expected the above including an academic from Sheffield Uni.

Thank god Reeves made the decisions. A Blairite with a keenness to not damage business.

Although personally major IHT changes would’ve been okay with me.

A really good budget for working people

Not as harsh as the media had everyone believing .

Good to see promises upheld

Personally would of preferred for it to have gone further to raise more money but overall it’s very fair
