Meet Wenlock and Mandeville, your mascots for the London 2012 Olympic Games

Focus groups of children and families helped form the designs and children's author Michael Morpurgo added a story concept for an animated series.

"We've created our mascots for children," said Locog chair Lord Coe.

"They will connect young people with sport, and tell the story of our proud Olympic and Paralympic history."

The characters are named after the village of Much Wenlock in Shropshire - which hosted a precursor to the modern Olympic Games in the 19th Century - and the birthplace of the Paralympic Games, Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire.

I dont know whether I like them or hate them, at a first glance they look like mutated piles of turd, but looking at them again they aren't too bad, it fits in well with the Olympics logo thats for sure

I think they are colourful and cheerful and will be great for kids- they story concept they showed on the one show earlier sold them to me. They probably spent an abhorrent amount of money designing them, though.

I think they are crap. I was hoping for a Lion, wearing a white t-shirt with the Olympic rings on it.

Why o why did they need to set up a focus group? AND to get a childrens author in to write a backstory?

I can't see these two characters translating into cuddly toys very well.

I don't know, the lion would be too cliche I would find, plus apparently 'fur' is not very popular for the childerkins of today.

and seeing how they try to make them into a tv series is a nice way to try and introduce them as characters, plus michael morpurgo is a great writer, I've grown up on his books and they've all been great.
