Dunno why this has all descended into yet another "PC vs MAC" binfest. The thread is supposed to be about a brand new product launched by Apple amongst much bru-ha and fanfare, and whether we reckon it'll be any bloody good. Whats PC's and MACS got to do with it ?

Save the age-old MAC debates for elsewhere can't we ?

Because people have to trudge in with the same old incredibly tired, outdated stereotypes and prejudices, unfortunately.

You need to get out more then, very few in the real world. I've only been doing PC Support for the last 18 years though, I could be wrong. Right now, typically there are about 50 people around me and like everywhere else not one is a Mac. I'd would love to know just where you have seen an office full of Macs as there are but two exceptions, a learning facility and a design office. And having said that they will always be PCs there too. I think you're telling porkies.

The magazine and television industry are the real world last time I looked.

In the "real world", if you care to visit the biggest television technology conference and exhibition in Europe this year in Amsterdam, you'll see that the Apple stand is massive.

As well as flogging toys, the company does supply industry with specialist products are very succesful at it.

Sure the desktops are full of PCs, but there are departments that are full of Macs too.

In fact I hate to tell you but last year I was working for a large theatrical organisation in London who used to use Macs for designing stage sets. They don't anymore as they found that PCs could do the same job for a lot less (the software not just the hardware). A lot of 'traditional' Mac roles are going over to PCs for a whole variety of reasons but the basic premise is about cost. You use one type of computer you standardise of hard and software, communications and training, all of which are cheaper on a PC anyway because there is a lot of competition.

A lot of folk are saying Apple haven't got it right, but largely they seem to be coming from a stancepoint of viewing the iPad as a laptop/notebook/netbook replacement. It's clearly not intended to be that and you'd be stuffed it you tried to use it as your only device.

i think half the problem there is that Apple and Jobs himself have made that claim. in the bulidup to this product they have slated netbooks and said their new product would solve the short comings of netbooks and capture this space.

For the LAST TIME. Let's look at the ratio between the population of Hoxton/Shoreditch types and the amount of Apple users WORLDWIDE.

and they are the journos that rave everything apple. if you read the mainstream media you'd think ipod was the first mp3 player and iphone was the first smartphone and you will bearly hear a critisism about anything apple as if they were perfect. that rubs off on the gerneral public, the chap or chappette who only reads the gadget page of the Guardian, Mail, Times etc thinks the Apple stuff is cool and the best thing in town.

The Ipod's monopoly is amazing. It's nowhere near as superior as its price suggests and actually, bar a snazzy design, is inferior in many aspects. Especially sound quality.

Their Imacs and macbooks are great though. Just don't get the fuss about all this unnecessary 'other stuff'.

Regardless, just what is 'a thread of this type'? It certainly wasn't a pro-Apple thread. It wasn't a pro-Mac thread. It wasn't to discuss Macs and PCs. It was a thread to speculate pre-launch (and now discuss post-launch) the Apple tablet device en route.

A consumer-focused product that has little to do with Macs.

And I did ask those who can't help but get a rabidly frothing mouth at the mere mention of Apple to kindly stay away. It was a vain attempt to stop the thread becoming the same old bollocksy binfest. Oh well.

I said that actually. However trust me they are not the norm, have you ever seen a call centre with Macs ? I could go on but I hate to say it but I rather doubt that you have worked in as many different industries or sites as I have. Believe me there are few Macs. The problem is partially historic. Back in the day when Novell was the standard network software Macs with Apple Talk were notoriously unreliable as far as comms were concerned, that was one of the other reasons why most organisation stopped using them. I know that now there's no problem but there again in the IT industry a lot has happened since Novell ruled the roost.

Who's 'frothing at the mouth' ? Do stop being such a drama queen ! I am merely making some observations based on my own experience. I have not critisised Macs have I ? Just merely made the point that Mac users tend to be a bit up themselves and you have just proved the point with you little hissy fit

I fully understand that in banks and call centres they are non existent, but in many other industries they are far from that.

They are quite obviously used for different tasks.

It's really like saying you don't come across as many linux servers as desktop PCs.
