[Sussex] 200 mph on Sussex road

Any guesses what road it is?

I've watched it a few times and tried recognising it but it's impossible.

Was thinking maybe a section of the A23 southbound?

Looking at the roadside and trying to see the signs, I would guess he's joined the A23 at Copthorne and gone south to Pease Pottage (pretty sure there's a services sign toward the end of the video), but that's pure conjecture on my part and if this is not appropriate to post please mods remove it.

It doesn't matter how good a driver he is, or how clear the roads are. Driving at that speed is insane, and he is very lucky to have got away with it. Only takes a slow vehicle in the right hand lane or another obstacle and it is game over.

Really is like russian roulette. If he does this on a regular basis it is only a matter of time.

Pre lockdown there was a BMW driver who every day was really desperate to get to his (I assume) place of work quickly.

Every morning (about 5:30) it was the same thing, tearing up behind me/us/all of us, going straight into the oncoming lane speeding past his obstruction.

One morning I was behind a colleague, behind a high sided lorry.
Approaching a pedestrian island.
At the start of a gentle left bend

I spied Mr Black Beamer and chuckled to myself as he'd be held up.

Or not as the case was, us, traffic island and lorry were all overtaken.
He just got back in before what would have been a head on collision.
That would have killed him and his occupants, the innocent oncoming cars occupants.
Myself and x others wouldn't have got out unscathed.

At work both myself and Ed wondered why he does that "every bloody morning".

In my yoof, driving back from the Stuart Munday/Jimmy Case "wot" Leicester game I drove down that stretch, at speed, refusing to turn the steering wheel, unless I really had too.

Happy dayz.

OK, 200mph is way OTT - quite rightly too - but, leaving aside any virtue signalling on the lines of 'I've never exceeded a speed limit in my life and I detest and condemn anyone who ever has' (aka liars)......how many NSCers, on buying anew car (or new to them anyway) have gone out and sought an empty, safe piece of road to see how fast it would go?

Honest yes or no answers (not to be used in evidenced............................)

From my first car (a Renault 750 - 750cc with one cylinder defunct - that I cranked up to 50mph) to most of the rest I've usually tried it. At a quiet time on a dual carriageway with no traffic around - and no, I've certainly never had anything remotely capable of 200mph (and wouldn't have tried it anyway) but a 12 year old 998cc Nissan Micra with 120K on the dial did actually manage the ton once.

So, totally honesty here - who has and who has not, bought a car and then taken it out somewhere safe to see 'what it would do'?

In my young days I did 114 miles an hour down the M23. It was a late at night, but that's no justification. I do forgive myself though. I was only 11.

Drivers name now circulating on social media so expect the police to finally get their man soon. Wonder what fine / ban / or sentence he will get?

I suspect a suspended sentence, 2 year ban and community service. Just going by similar cases. Had the road been busier then they would probably be jailed.

Nope, never.

Been to track days at circuit de Catalunya but don't use my car, you can hire a Ferrari, Lamborghini, whatever is on offer

I've had 2 Fiestas and now a Ford SMax and never done more than 140kmh in any of them

It shouldn't take much investigation work to whittle down which car this is. There can't be too many RS6's on the road, and you can just about ascertain the mileage (or at least tidy up the video to show this) along with the age/model from the dashboard. Hopefully they get him as he's a danger to everyone on the road. The on-road ANPRs should be able to work assist too.

Dronfield bypass is the road of choice here. Speed built up through a series of bends, then a massive long downhill straight with no junctions or lay-bys. Plus a totally clear view of whether or not there's traffic for the duration of the burn.

A mate of mine got 165 out of a speed limited (to 155) M3 on there years ago.

Of course I have never tested a car in that way as it would be illegal. And anyway, my car is limited to 155 as well, apparently.

From the BBC news website:

Two men have been arrested after a video of a car speeding at 201mph during the coronavirus lockdown was posted on social media.

The stunt was apparently filmed on the M23 southbound between Gatwick and Crawley in West Sussex.

It showed the speedometer of a black Audi RS6, later seized by police.

Both men, 38, from Crawley and Horsham, were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. One of them was also held on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.

One was released while inquiries continue, while the other was released on conditional bail until 9 July.

Playing devil's advocate, how can they arrest anyone when they have no proof (in that video at least) of who was driving? Let alone 2 people?

I guess they must have clear evidence or even confession and it seems the car wasn't even the driver's.

first, police need reasonable suspicion for an arrest, proof is for courts. expect those in the film make a big deal about it, police get to hear. with an identity for investigations they can go to Youtube and get IP of the poster, track it to phone or internet of the upload. so they know who's door to knock on.

Not difficult. EXIF data in the video, evidence on a phone. Local cameras looking for cars at that time / date
