Remember that night. Yoof fans will simply not believe that the drainage was so bad during the first season especially that a sinkhole appeared as a frustrated Micky Adams and Alan Cork appealed to improve the surface which was affecting out style of play.

I think we played Southend a couple of weeks later (New Year's Day?) and the pitch looked like a WW1 battlefield. There were big puddles everywhere. Think we lost that one too.

That’s right, their side including a certain flair right back called Nathan Jones ‘skipping’ down the flanks. Won their player of the season if memory serves me right.

So did I - he was never really selected from memory?

I recall he played a fair amount under Horton. We also had Paul Sturgess around that time but can’t remember if they played at the same time or one replaced the other.

I’d imagine Adams didn’t fancy him defensively as he was a decent ball player. Jamie Campbell was brought in for the start of the Withdean era. A pretty ordinary footballer but 6 foot + with the physicality to cope with league 2 football.

That was the season after when we won the title. We did lose 2-0. We couldn’t play at home for a month after that due to the state of the pitch

Probably the joint wettest game at Withdean along with when we beat Millwall 4-1. Did Scott Ramsey score for us or am I imagining it?

Oh yes, that hole was enormous, wasn’t it! Incredibly dangerous to play on, someone could have easily broken their leg! Good days.

All very true but that was still one of the most memorable games at Withdean, if only for the sheer misery of sitting out in a constant downpour to see us lose a 3-2 lead. Rite of passage and all that. We were there, And the only way was up ...

We had to walk for miles in freezing cold rain to get to Brighton’s ground, a muddle of portakabins, catering vans, and scaffolding stands. Had to try and wipe seat dry with loo paper from the portakabin toilets but we were so wet it made no difference. Then we had to try and watch the match so far away from the stand due to the pitch having an athletics track around the outside of it. Through driving rain, shivering with cold we lost to Rochdale 3-4......
And you tell that to the kids of today....and they’ll never believe you!!!

It was the first game I missed at Withdean. I was at the Brighton Centre watching Blur (who were awful).

I went to this, one of my few times in the North Stand. Didn’t Jason Peake play for Dale? I was in the hospitality prefab. Paul Rejer was the ref and a very nice chap to talk to. Adams hoiked MOM Gary Hart out of the presentation and informed anyone in earshot training would commence at 8am. I think Adams came close to losing his job around this time. One month on of course, Albion changed for ever. (Slowly)
