Interesting session ahead... the lights are on, and the gloom will descend (gradually!)

35 overs to be bowled... and a new ball due in 25, just when the lights kick in.

Surely Cook is the least of our worries??

I meant minor doubts in Cook's own mind.

It can't be easy having given up the captaincy on the back of a succession of opening partners, all of whom have failed. This must have played on his mind, and the fact that he hasn't yet scored a test ton this summer will not have helped. Cook is also the wrong side of 30 and he wouldn't be human if some doubts in his own ability haven't crept in.

If he then goes tonless against the Windies in this series then an already daunting task for Cook in Australia would be that much harder. England needs him to get to three figures, not just for this match but for the Ashes preparation.

Oh I forgot Courtney Walsh! What they would give to have any of those bowlers now...

When you think of the standard of the bowlers that barely got a test in that great Windies side who would now walk into this side: Wayne Daniel, Patrick Patterson, Winston Benjamin, Winston Davis, Kenny Benjamin etc.

There is a boundary every over.

:nono:

Almost two-thirds of the way through the day - 43 boundaries in just over 59 overs. That's one every 8.25 balls. And Bairstow and Stokes are still to come!

Patterson was very quick - unbelievable he didn't play more Tests, apparently Graham Gooch said he was the fastest of the lot in fact he thought he was 'frightening'.

What is the highest at Edgbaston? Is this it or are they at 228 still chasing.

411 for the 4th wicket by PBH May and MC Cowdrey v West Indies, 1957
331 for the 2nd wicket by RT Robinson and DI Gower v Australia 1985
288 for the 4th wicket by N Hussain and GP Thorpe v Australia 1997

I remember sitting in front of the TV all day as a young lad watching Peter May and Colin Cowdrey get that 411 but didnt think it was at Edgbaston but I wouldnt argue.
