1983 Cup Final Money

In 1983 £30,000 would have bought you a decent property in Brighton or Hove
Graham Moseley has property in Hove. As (did) Perry Digweed and Neil Smillie.

Those three weren't the big hitters at the time, in terms of wages etc.

So it is likely they went to the bank and got themselves a mortgage, rather than with a bag of cash from the FA Cup Final bonuses.

Urban myth or not but I was once told by someone close to the club that Steve Gatting bought a house in Hove for cash in the summer of 1983.

Your right in as much as some of the players had deals that including their mortgages in some way, I am not saying they were in any way illegal, but it was a time when big time players could negotiate strong deals and we seemed willing participants.

I had thought that the money had generally dried up by 83/84, when did Foster, Lawrenson, Robinson leave ?

Apart from a some allegations of ticket touting, players enjoyed good bonuses but the official bonus sheet states approx. £2500 - £5000 for each players efforts for the FA Cup.

As revealed by Tony 0898 Millard at the first ever Gulls Eye dinner in Jan 1989 a large part of the cup final money went on bonuses.

The squad of 15, including Keiran O Regan and Perry Digweed, each got £15,000 for the final and the same for the replay, which amounts to nearly half a million quid before Jimmy Melia took his 'bit' as well.

I still had a copy of the original bonus sheet, but from the 1981/82 season.

It is quite intriguing and I don not think it is something that betrays anyones confidence as it is the bonuses for all the professional players of that year and is a snapshot of how 'big' the club once was.

I think we can conclude that figures of £30 000 a player is inaccurate.

League Result Bonuses:

First 5 games £500.00 win and £250.00 draw

Thereafter:

1st - 5th £500.00 Win and £250 a draw
6th - 11th £400.00 Win and £200.00 draw
12th - 16th £200.00 Win and £100.00 draw
17th - 19th £200.00 Win £75.00 draw
20th - 22nd £200.00 Win £25.00 draw

FA Cup

3rd Round £150.00 Win and £75.00 draw
4th Round £200.00 Win and £100.00 draw
5th Round £400.00 Win and £200.00 draw
6th Round £750.00 Win and £375.00 draw
Semi Final £2500.00 Win and £1250.00 draw

Final £5000.00 appearance ( seems no win or draw bonus just a straight appearance ) no comment on any replay though !!!

Also to note that any qualification into a European Competition each player would receive £5000.00

All seems good money for 1981/82 and on top of some good contracts too, but exciting times no doubt.

you can bandy about so called bonuses and such like 9k a player hardly accounts for the missing millions

It wasn't a comment on where any money has gone, I will leave that to the conspiracy theorists, it seems likely that we had an ambitious Chairman who tried to make us competitive at the top level.

It was more a point at Harty's post that Tony Millard had confirmed that the club had handed out something like £30 000 per player the Cup Final year, which these figures make that unlikely.

Still interesting figures though !
