Why the wanker smiley? I've been really polite and patient with you and tried to answer your question. You're going to have to face it though, you are never going to be satisfied. The Cup Final was nearly THIRTY YEARS ago. No one from that era is connected with the club any more and the records have long been destroyed. Therefore the club cannot do what you want them to do and make a definitive statement so that we can 'go into the Falmer with a clean sheet' (or whatever it was you said). And even if they did - you probably wouldn't believe them anyway. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you remember 1983 and the years before and after and you weren't paying attention at the time (and you obviously weren't) then sadly your stubborness will prevent you from ever knowing the truth.

Probably best that you go one believing that Mike Bamber stole it, or Jimmy Melia spent it all on shoes, or whatever you want to believe. The rest of us will look to the future.

In those days it wasn't about money and how much you'd get.It was about the grandeur of competing for what John Vinnicombe described as the most precious prize in sport. The FA Cup Final in those days was the only live match on TV at all in England. (apart from England matches) It was the most anticipated game of the whole season the League was a poor second to the cup in those days. As a 14 year old having bought my first junior season ticket with my paper round money in August 1982 and living about a mile from the Goldstone it was Boys Own stuff indeed and still in the top 5 experiences of my life......so far!

The squad of 15, including Keiran O Regan and Perry Digweed, each got £15,000 for the final and the same for the replay, which amounts to nearly half a million quid before Jimmy Melia took his 'bit' as well.

I always thought The players had it written into their contracts that if the club ever played in a major final or one the league championship all money made from such an event would be divided equally between the playing squad. Now the Albion did attract some top players in those days!

I am sure Vinnicombe metioned this once.

The squad of 15, including Keiran O Regan and Perry Digweed, each got £15,000 for the final and the same for the replay, which amounts to nearly half a million quid before Jimmy Melia took his 'bit' as well.

Yeah, it's already been mentioned on here that bonuses took up a large part. Won't satisy 'Return of the Rev' though, just because we're all saying it doesn't make it fact ...

Divide by 6 and you might get the actual figure if they won the game, when they lost it was nearer £2500 per player.

Actually I will ask him to dig it out again.

However at times he was the 'butt' of many of the teams jokes and was dominated by some within that first team squad, but that's another issue.

All I can say is that I have seen the bonus sheet for that season, I felt the numbers were quite high for that period, but I can promise you the official bonuses which were signed and agreed prior to the season start was nothing like the figures you are saying.

There were rumours of tickets being sold on, but that seemed the norm back in the day, but players officially receiving £30,000 for the 2 games is way off the mark.

Now I havent seen that sheet for many months although I will have another look, but I am sure that winning and appearance fee's added up to £5000 per player and something like £2500 if they lost, even that seemed quite high to me for the 80's.

It was also interesting that the League bonuses seemed generous too, up in the high hundreds if we got a win on top of their fairly lucrative salaries whilst sitting in the top 3 with a diminishing amount depending on League positions !!!

But then again we were playing up until that season in the top league and were not frightened to compete financially.

If you think about it, that would of been an obscene amount for 1983 and wholly an unnecessary bonus amount to offer players at the time.

The £5000 still seems generous to me and likely to be in line with the bigger clubs in the competition at the time.

What money ? Like today we got 35% of the gate. Actually once voucher ans season ticket claimants took their share Bamber did sadly offer United most of the remainder, probably why the voucher system was introduced in the first place. If you mean that money, then only a handful of people know. It was apparent on the day there were a lot of United in our end and many reports of United fans with tickets stamped BHAFC. Euphoria took over and no one who had a ticket cared less.

I think the 83 cup final money never existed in the terms you and others think and as someone else said kept the wolf from the door for a couple of years.

In 1983 £30,000 would have bought you a decent property in Brighton or Hove
