What is it with spending vast sums of money on statues across the UK whilst leaving our roads full of holes, the NHS underfunded and the Armed Forces short and missing essential equipment. Surely this misspending lark is getting out of hand

Kapoor designs 2012 Orbit tower ( BBC News - Kapoor designs 2012 Orbit tower )

Olympic Orbit 2012 will be built near the stadium

A spiralling sculpture designed by Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor has been chosen as the monument to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 115m tall piece, named the ArcelorMittal Orbit, will be placed in the Olympic Park and will be 22m higher than New York's Statue of Liberty.

The £19.1m design incorporates the five Olympic rings and will offer visitors panoramic views of London.

London Mayor Boris Johnson revealed plans for the tower on Wednesday.

"I am deeply honoured to be invited to undertake this challenging commission," Kapoor said.

"I am particularly attracted to it because of the opportunity to involve members of the public in a particularly close and personal way. It is the commission of a lifetime."

The artist will work with leading structural designer, Cecil Balmond of engineering firm Arup.

Organisers said Balmond had worked on "some of the greatest contemporary buildings in the world", including the CCTV building in Beijing, as well as numerous Serpentine Gallery pavilion commissions.

''Long after the Games are over, our aim is to have a stunning spectacle in east London that will be recognised around the world," Mr Johnson said.

"Anish Kapoor's inspired art work will truly encapsulate the energy and spirit of London during the Games and, as such, will become the perfect iconic cultural legacy."

Steel company ArcelorMittal - owned by steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal - will fund up to £16m of the project with £3.1m provided by the London Development Agency.

Given that it is only £3.1 million of public money, I recon it is a bit of a bargain, especially as they will undoubedly be charging for entry. I like the design too - makes up for the somewhat boring design of the stadium.

I know it's a tired old cliche but I can think of plenty of better ways of spending that cash.

It looks like someone scribbled on a sheet of paper and sent it in as an entry. I know Anish Kapoor is an established artist and the Sea Curve was incredible but this is just poor.....I'm not fussed about the money as I agree there should be something like this but seriously who thought this looked good? Probably the same people who chose the logo

Some people will complain about anything. Firstly, we all know that no one can design something that is universally loved. Secondly, it is more than just a statue which is clear from the description. It will last longer than the games and will be a tourist attraction. It will, as BoF says, create some jobs. It is being built mainly on private funds.

As regards the 2012 logo, what exactly is wrong with it. It does what it says on the tin!

It's not a complaint it's a matter of opinion. I personally think that 2012 is going to be a financial disaster.
