Rape of Hastings, Sussex
The Weald is good, the Downs are best—
I'll give you the run of 'em, East to West.
Beachy Head and Winddoor Hill,
They were once and they are still.
Firle, Mount Caburn and Mount Harry
Go back as far as sums'll carry.
Ditchling Beacon and Chanctonbury Ring,
They have looked on many a thing;
And what those two have missed between 'em
I reckon Truleigh Hill has seen 'em.
Highden, Bignor and Duncton Down
Knew Old England before the Crown.
Linch Down, Treyford and Sunwood
Knew Old England before the Flood.
And when you end on the Hampshire side—
Butser's old as Time and Tide.
The Downs are sheep, the Weald is corn,
You be glad you are Sussex born!

"You be glad you are Sussex born!". I was fearing that I am not as proud to be from Sussex as, say, a Yorkshireman is about his home county. I think I probably am, but they are just louder about it.

Some folks as come to Sussex,
They reckons as they know -
A durn sight better what to do
Than simple folks, like me and you,
Could possibly suppose.
But them as comes to Sussex,
They mustn't push and shove,
For Sussex will be Sussex,
And Sussex won't be druv!
Mus Wilfred come to Sussex,
Us heaved a stone at he,
Because he reckoned he could teach
Our Sussex fishers how to reach
The fishes in the sea.
But when he dwelt among us,
Us gave un land and luv,
For Sussex will be Sussex,
And Sussex won't be druv!
All folks as come to Sussex
Must follow Sussex ways -
And when they've larned to know us
well,
There's no place else they'll wish to
dwell
In all their blessed days -
There ant no place like Sussex,
Until ye goos above,
For Sussex will be Sussex,
And Sussex won't be druv

Happy Sussex Day everyone.

And let no one* come on here and say that 'Sussex' doesn't exist and that it's 'East and West'. We may have two administrative regions but we're one county.

* Yes Lord Bracknell it's you I'm talking about! :) Can you ban yourself from this thread? :)

I'm a bit worried that Sussaxon hasn't posted on this thread.

Do you think he's alright?

Does anyone (apart from, apparently, Lord B) actually think of Sussex in terms of East and West? I don't think I've met anyone from inside or outside the county who refers to east or west sussex.

What happens on Sussex day?

Is anyone actually doing anything to celebrate it?

Stool Ball. Every parish/school and community club will be playing a celebratory game.
