13/14 year old constanstly swearing in the family stand last night

In the 'family' stand last night I took along my son & a couple of his mates, all aged just under 10 years old, to watch the footie.

Behind us was a group of about five 13 to 14 year olds, with an adult.

All through the first half, one of the boys behind us kept swearing at the top of his voice, whether about the ref, lino,Charlton fans, Smith or whatever. Total randomness, 3 to 4 abusive words a minute. Wan**r, cu*t, bolloxs, slag, etc.

There was one reason and one reason only I didn't tell him to shut it, simply because his dad would have probably given some back ( seeing as he's let his boy swear for 45 mins in a public place), and I can assure you, so would I.

And I wouldn't want any kids ( this is the family stand ) to see any of that.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no angel, and my behaviour and language can be colourfull at the best of times, but not in the 'family' stand.

Sure we all know that the kids hear this language in the playground, so my boy wouldn't have learnt anything new.

But if he utters any of those words in front of me before he's 18, let alone shouting them in a public place, he knows he will be in massive trouble with me and his mum (probably buy him a season ticket to teach him a lesson).

What a scum father and kid.

yes pnut I understand your sentiments. The dad should have said something to stop him. We are on a slippery slope socially, people getting away with more and more and not being held to account. left unchecked we'll go back to apeman.

Times like this i wish we all lived in UAE, steal and your hand is chopped off, assault and your c0ck goes, swear obsceneties in front of kids and your tongue can go....

I would say that if it happens again: have a quiet word with the father(?) & say that you'd like a quick 'chat' with him at Half-Time. Keep it friendly; say your piece; stay cool; & see what happens. If it looks like he'll sort things, all well & good. However, if the guy gets narky - then walk away & explain the situation to a Steward (preferably in the stand you're in). The Hi-Viz mob will be only too pleased to remove such a dickhead from that particular environment, so get 'em involved. One way or t'other, I'm sure you'll be able to sort it (if it reoccurs): so 'go for it' - & tell us how you get on.

I'm sorry but I disagree, my first game at the Albion was around 78 and I stood on a stool in the East stand (chicken run) I always remembered all these old men swearing!!! I thought it was funny but I knew because of my upbringing that it was not the sort of language that I wanted to use on a regular basis. If you are that concerned I'm sure you will bring your kids up how you see fit and maybe they will know that football matches can be a time for swearing far more than usual so as long as they recognise it's not particularly pleasant outside a football stadium what is the problem?

You said that you know your kids hear it in the playground so are you going to stop your kids going to school?

I associate swearing as a sign of passion/excitement which is lacking at the Withdean so please don't do anything to make it anymore drab than it is already.

In a couple of paragraphs you have summed up alot of what is wrong with society today. Swearing has become the norm rather then the exception, and to basically say you associate swearing with passion is worrying. The family stand is a place kids are supposed to be able to go to avoid that sort of thing and to be able to support the Albion without using swear words.

Swearing generally is usually a good indication of ignorance.

What a c0ck. It's a family stand for a reason. There must have been 3000 unoccupied seats around the ground where people who wanted to swear and behave like p1ssed adults could do so quite freely, so sit there.

As I've said, I'm no angel, and I certainly haven't been in my 'youth' in the North Stand.

But there's no way that a 14 year old , or anyone else, should be allowed to swear like that constantly, at the top of his voice. Especially in the FAMILY STAND

so when I take my 9 year old daughter and 11 year old son.Its ok to swear is it?
I think Twinkle Toes has the right idea.If a quiet chat doesn't work.Ask the steward,if no luck still.Take them bowling instead.

if you take them bowling at least they'll recognise that at least the defence is about as resilient!

I went to go see Crawley a little last season and every game behind me there were 5 old farts (nice men) who use to always swear and it was very funny. People have different views on it, some people couldn't give a shit, for some people it may piss them off a little but they don't care that much and for others it seems they hate it and want something done about it.

It's footy. You will get twats who do this, one thing in your favour is was that it was in the family area, as far as I know Broadfeild don't have a family area and just everyone is everywhere.

But swearing in the family area is pretty bad over and over for 45 minutes aint on.

Oh, so I'm in the wrong then?

I tell you what, I'll take all the kids bowling in future then, not to support the Albion.

If you condone 14 tear old shouting **** at the top of his voice for 45 minutes, then maybe you were his dad.

What's wrong with you?

I'm probably about to get flamed for this .... but .... as an ex-steward you should have reported it. Any steward following their training would have monitored it and dealt with it. I was involved in the rumpus a few seasons ago when two teenage girls got threaterned with being chucked out for swearing. Initally it was thought to be their fathers but after monitoring it was found to be the daughters - it was all over the Harty phone in. Parents should treach their children that swearing for no reason is wrong. Certainly if I'd been in the stand with my two young sons and heard that I'd have reported it.

If you didn't like it and didn't want to say anything to the father or the kids then tell a steward. That's what they are therefore. If the father won't stop his son swearing then he should pay full whack and not go in the family stand but if you don't tell the nearest steward or the club nothing will improve and that is also a sad indictment on society, ie. I don't like it but I won't do anything about it.

You hear it all the time, some bloke complains that their neighbour or whatever is claiming dole or whatever but still working and it's coming out of my taxes etc, but they don't report it.

Telling the dad you want a quiet word at half time is tantamount to telling him you're going to smack him one IMHO. Telling a steward is by far the best option.

Mind you, if those kids were about 14-15 they were probably embarrassed as hell to be in the Family Stand with all the dads and littlies. The swearing was probably just a desperate and pathetic attempt to maintain some credibility.

I'm obviously wrong on all accounts then.

I'll e mail the club saying that all Junior Seagulls and Gully's gang members on their birthday get a list of A to Z swear words along with their pencil set.
