Premier League clubs will be obliged to ensure that at least half of their first-team squads are made up of “homegrown” players under drastic plans put forward by the FA to deal with Brexit. The proposal, which would reduce the number of overseas players in each 25-man squad to 12, will be put to the 20 clubs this week.

England’s top tier is under pressure to agree a deal with the FA for Brexit. If the clubs do not do so, they could face a nightmare “no-deal” scenario in which all EU players would have to fulfil the same criteria that non-EU players do now in order to get a work permit.

Bournemouth for the Premier League title?

I thought clubs didn’t buy British players because they are so over priced, so how come little Bournemouth have managed to keep foreigners down to 5?

Lowering the quality of the PL, inflating transfer fees and wages of homegrown status players.

Yet another downside to Brexit, which was predicted by enlightened posters on the main Brexit thread months and months ago.

Another snippet:

"In return for an agreement to boost the number of homegrown players in first-team squads, it is understood that the FA would agree to give a “governing body endorsement” (GBE) for a work permit for every foreign player who gets a contract with a Premier League club. It believes that would still allow top foreign talent to come to England and maintain the Premier League’s global popularity, yet boost the number of English players and remove all the red tape that surrounds the process."

...would this mean, for example, Percy Tau would immediately qualify, free from existing criteria?

Let's end Brexit debate on this thread right here, please, and keep it on-topic.

Note that says English players. We cannot include Scots, Welsh or Irish.

Project Fear continues. Oops sorry boss just seen your non Brexit advice...

But...this really has nothing to do with Brexit, regardless of the slant given.

?

So you include the word brexit in your initial post but it isn't a brexit thread although the decision has arisen directly from the decision to leave the EU.

Correct.

It was intended to be a discussion about how clubs, particularly our own, could/would deal with having to reduce foreign player numbers to 12 from the current 17.

Arguing the toss on whose fault that is or isn't belongs on the Brexit thread.

It's a good thing that all of our young starlets haven't got bored of not playing for British clubs and moved to the continent...

Oh...

The club are all over this, they have just offered our English top goalscorer another years contract.

As mentioned on the Brexit thread, our 17 includes :

Suttner and Schelotto who are a long way from selection.

Bong and Bruno who are out of contract at the end of the season anyway.

This may prevent Bruno getting another year with us, sadly.

A very good point though about it making things easier for Tau.

Wont it in the end depend on the definition of 'Home grown' ... clubs currently circumvent that by signing them for the U23's(U18's) so they get at least 3 years at the club making them 'home grown' wherever they are actually born.

It currently poses more questions than it provides answers , though IMHO I think it would be good as long as they put some kind of restriction on transfer fees for home growns or clubs like the Albion simply could not compete on an even more un-level playing field

I can't see this getting through. The clubs have too much power.

Fantastic news. Give young British players a much better chance.

There's more than a whiff of fake news about this, IMHO. I may be wrong, but that is my first reaction.

Two things occur to me (if it's true) - firstly, it's nothing to do with that which must not be discussed on this thread, and secondly, "The proposal, which would reduce the number of overseas players in each 25-man squad to 12, will be put to the 20 clubs this week." Who will reject it out of hand. End of (non) story.

Obviously there’s some grey shades over what constitutes ‘foreign’ is this context.

The current AFCB squad includes;

Boruc (Poland)
Begovic (Bosnia)
Ake (Netherlands)
Rico (Spain)
Lerma (Colombia)
Brooks (Wales)
Fraser (Scotland)
King (Norway)
Mousset (France)
