Just been radio channel hopping and stumbled across Running Up That Hill by Placebo. On KERRANG! of all places. Just seems that much more multi-layered and impressively depressive than the shrill Kate Bush original. It's a clear YES from me, Jeff

You want it darker?

Mad World covered by Jasmine Thompson, no idea who she is but this is blissfully bleak

Going off at a slight tangent here's an example of a band performing a totally different version of a previous song. In this instance the ' spanking' is spectacular since the original version was an abomination from the abomination of an album that was St Anger.

Far better than the Wall Of Voodoo original

Wall of Voodoo have a very special place in my heart.
I see nothing in this version to imply it spanks the original... but glad to see someone covering a WoV song.
For a long while they had pretty much disappeared from view.

GOSBTS
Johnny Winter with a storming version of Jumpin' Jack Flash. I remember watching this when it was first broadcast in 1974 on The Old Grey Whistle Test, still sounds good today.

Well that's a good thing. Ignore the term thrash when applied to them. They are so much better than that. For your introduction may I suggest :

The Black Album (Metallica) - The best introduction by means of their most commercial album. It's in the top 20 selling albums of all time for a good reason.

Master of Puppets - Old school Metallica that's a little heavier but with a title track that is a metal classic.

Load - The album that took up a more bluesy guitar tone and they got their hair cut!

S&M1 - A brilliant collaboration with the San Francisco symphony orchestra that put a whole new spin on some of their classic tracks.

Avoid at all costs St Anger! The worst album ever by one of the world's biggest bands. An abomination borne of addiction recovery and navel gazing psycho babble therapy.
