I think maybe wait and see what happens before passing judgement

a novel approach.
the government announces £30bn of economic aid and the criticism is of a voucher for lunch. shouldnt have bothered.

Loads of 50% off food vouchers available mid week on various websites with no maximum of £10, this is a complete waste of time.

Only if you eat in shit restaurants like Bella Pasta etc. Good idea by the government IMHO. I'll see how it affects the restaurant Miss WS works in.

Most restaurants will just keep their prices the same and keep the extra 5%

Question. Hotels etc have been told to reduce VAT from 20% to 5% on all bookings, effective from today:
"VAT will be cut from the current rate of 20% to 5% for the next six months on food, accommodation and attractions. The cut lasts from Wednesday 8 July until 12 January 2021."

Will this apply if I've already booked and paid for accommodation in August? Am I now entitled to refund of the difference between 20% and 5% VAT?

Nice to see the government coming round to the idea that it has to spend money to get the economy moving.
I feared they were going to slip back into austerity mode and **** the country over again.
Hopefully they will stick to it and start investing in all sectors of the economy.

Of course it will have to be sound like a different approach than those suggested by Brown/Milliband/Corbyn.
Because they were nasty socialists, who don't understand economics.

Same here, although I have already booked for December, I have only paid a deposit.

I had a conversation with a friend today and he was saying how good this £10 voucher is and we can go out one evening.
I then reminded him that A/ I've a taste card that gives 50% off all food regardless of the final total and B/ he's a card that gives 25% off the final bill including drinks. £10? our discount is normally £50 between 4 in a curry house including beer & wine.

As if by magic I've just received a Taste Card email. You can get a card FREE for 60 days use.

Where does this Taste Card work? Is the government voucher going to be widely accepted?

Does the restaurant get re-imbursed for the discount by taste card?

from the info available (bbc, moneysavingexpert), the discount will apply to any business that signs up. i cant imagine any would not (maybe a few that dont want eyes on their turnover). also valid with other discounts.

That's what I assumed and having just looked at the Taste website, it seems their card gets discounts at chains. If the government discount gets people in independent places, all the better.

Mitchells & Butlers is the parent company, though went down quite a bit today (apparently disappointment it didnt cover drink). looks very oversold, medium term double your money.

I'm going to need every incentive I can get in order to kickstart the economy..... I had a feeling that after all the economic uncertainty my company would see it as a way to increase profits and reduce costs by effectively saying " you are lucky to have a job " ….Recently started back at work doing 2 days work and two on furlough still, so get 100% wages for two days and 80% for the furlough days.... since coming back the boss said he needed to " Tidy Up " the staff contracts, 1/2 hour lunch still unpaid but now we lose our two paid, 10 minute tea breaks. My next " annual " salary review is June 2021 , somehow I missed this years ???? that means I will have had one pay rise in 6 years now in this employment. So, did a quick calculation of my wages and It looks like my next pay rise will probably be October 21 when the government announces the new Minimum Wage, I'm currently on £9.31 an hour for all my hard work and i'm expecting the Minimum Wage to catch up with the tight ****ers then. …. And yes, been looking for 18 months !

It's an Employers Market now so you can expect all the normal rules and regs and expectations to go out the window, welcome to the Midden.

Yes, heard this, was hoping the 20% down to 5% VAT cut applied to beer but sadly not.
