I think the moon landing conspiracy was inspired by the (rather good) film "Capricorn One" which deals with a (plausible) conspiracy theory about a mission to Mars. Telly Salvalas saves the day at the end and the conspiracy is exposed.

think you'll find the film was inspired by the conspiracy, though certainly that film would have popularisd the idea in the wider public. core to the film, and the fatal flaw in the conspiracy, was the difficulty to get everyone to go along with it. the moon conspiracy requires thousands of engineers to be in on it, not to mention scientist in Russia and Europe capable of tracking the craft in orbit, who have kept to the story. oh, and then repeat it for another half dozen missions.

In related news, how would you explain the career that 'Magician Impossible' Dynamo has carved out for himself using stooges posing as members of the public in many of his stunts? They must have some watertight disclaimer in place that these people and everyone involved in making these shows signs.
