I have two of the humax boxes, one we use downstairs which we use a lot. The xbox we use mainly for catch up and sometimes freeview when all tv's are in use. The spare one has not been used for ages.

Pretty sure that you can not get Dave on freeview and you can only get it with Freesat.

I have the humax hdr fox t2 and I was able to connect a external hardrive to it and worked fine. I got mine from ebay for 40 pound. The link above has some different options too

We used to have a sky dish up and used that for freesat and now moved to Freeview. You get more channels with freesat and as you said loads of free channels

Freeview is the way to go and if you can get access to on demand channels even better.
