    Is there a difference between the two then? (It's 'were' by the way) Bit foolish to generalise that war-time footballers were COs. See my earlier post for famous examples of players who served but still played for club and country between 1939 and 1945.

    If that was all BHA could scrape together then - Aw diddums! Shankly, Matthews, Compton, Cullis and Busby all played wartime football and were all in the armed forces. Having said all that I do think it's a poor show on Palace that we can't say we have a better 'official' record over a club...
