Exactly. I walked from Lewes to the Anchor on Monday, partly following the old railway line. I had to restrain myself to three or we'd have never got back!
Plus, they put stuff like that in those pub guides and what have you and I'm sure it would start to bring a trade in. Barcombe Mills also...
But isn't that the same with locations such as Glynde, Berwick etc? I think opening the line itself is a major benefit and with time, migration towards the rail service could be created. Of course it isn't going to happen overnight but putting the link in would be a damn good start..
True but right now it isn't even a viable alternative. I don't think the journey time between Uckfield and Lewes would be more than 5-10mins surely, as there were only 1-2 intermediate stops planned and so I assume it would be similiar distance as Brighton to Lewes.
You should see the extent of what he wanted to cut in his second report, but luckily he was fired before that happened or we would be in a real mess.
Thing is, Lewes-Uckfield wasn't Beeching as I'm sure Lord B will testify, it was actually to do with a new road construction. Beeching actually...
I mean, it just makes sense in so many different ways.
I admit it is a bit of a deterrent having to change at Lewes for Brighton but that's hardly rocket science! I'm sure it would also appeal to Seaford branch stations to have a direct train service to London too.
Surely can't they drum some old rich benefactors up, I mean, it's Mid Sussex for christs sake.
To have it single tracked would cost just over £7million pounds, doesn't seem that much to me considering how much councils spunk on consultants. Double tracked was about £36mil but it still seems...
Apparently they said it's fine from a technical perspective but not from the financial side.
I agree, would be good to get fans down to Lewes. But generally, I'm sure people in Uckfield would have reason to visit Lewes which would become so much easier with the train link and it would make...
I said that to Dave Lepper 5 years ago, how much Brighton was at a crossroads in 2003 with the amount of major new projects in the pending tray, such as West Pier, Falmer, Black Rock, King Alfred, and if they weren't built and the NIMBYs got their way, we'd be going the way of Hastings.
5 years...
Exactly! And allowing the sane journey option of travelling down to the coast by train from Uckfield instead of having to go ALL the way up to East Croydon would be a good thing.
Even Brighton's Tory council said that weekend rail closures were hurting the local tourism trade, why don't they...
I wouldn't go that far! The i360 hasn't been put on ice(unlike KA) but the work is just starting later than expected.
We're not Hastings yet, we will outgun the NIMBYs.
BBC NEWS | England | Sussex | Railway line defeat 'just a blip'
Apparently again it has been deemed uneconomical. It seems ridiculous to me, especially the section in which the report states the Brighton Main Line is shut too rarely for a divisionary route to be worthwhile, it seems like its...
It's all like gambling isn't it?
Get rid of Gordon=snap election with little money and no resources, unlikely to win.
Keep Gordon could equal continued poll decline and a disasterous defeat which takes several elections to undo(1983, 1997)
If they get rid of Gordon and have a snap election...
I think they probably did do it. I don't think it was necessarily vandalism as in mindless, but deliberate in order to aid fare dodging and give an excuse.
Face it, if the privatised rail companies wanted to change their ticket machines, they would just do it without such an elaborate ruse...
Doesn't bother me either but it was bizarre at Clapham, I'd already had the police tell me they were using sniffer dogs, then five seconds later someone is in my face asking to see my ticket!:lolol:
