[Politics] Next Gov: Where will the money come from?

I have often wondered why labour don't change the pension relief allowances. I can see no reason why a higher tax rate payer should get more benefit than the basic rate. Changing it would be easy, fair and largely well received by the electorate. An easy win on the face of it so why don't they?>

[Politics] Next Gov: Where will the money come from?

I certainly wouldn't! VAT maybe more nuanced than I realised but I know the Church Commissioners pay little or no VAT in areas that others would. However VAT income would be small versus that raised if they paid tax on land sales, dividends, rental income etc

[Albion] AFC Bournemouth vs Brighton & Hove Albion *** Official Match Thread ***

Reminded me of one of my favourite lyrics (by the Macabees) 'I went into the changing room but when I came out, nothing had changed'

[Politics] Next Gov: Where will the money come from?

Labour will inherit a country with record levels of taxation and collapsed public services combined with ever increasing levels of inequality, a febrile world that is going to demand increasing levels of defence spending, an ageing population and an economy that is still in intensive care...

    [Football] Ticketing Scandal ??

You started your thread with a reasonable ticketing gripe and then ended with a childish 'them and us' jibe. Sympathy lost I'm afraid.

    [News] Gideon Falter

Agree but the abuse he was receiving was. Moreover he is trying to highlight the growing curse of anti semitism in our society. I think he has indeed been ‘disingenuous’ about his ‘just wanting to cross the road’ stance, but it has successfully made the whole country talk about racism and a...

I can understand your first point because that is the perception of many given how extreme anti semitism became in Germany and you are right to say that it is nowhere near comparable to Nazi Germany which was roughly from 1933 to 1945. However, prior to this time, anti semitism was apparent but...

    [News] Gideon Falter

You clearly need a history lesson. The Jews in 1930s Germany were singled out by a racist party and a predominantly anti semitic society. This led to the deaths of millions from all over Europe in the extermination camps. However, it started with what on the face of it might have been...

My question watching this and the extended version of the london march, is why ANYONE (whatever their cause) is allowed to march or demonstrate shouting ‘scum’ at people whilst having their faces covered?

Could you explain what you mean by this please? “ the reality is that 4,000 year old stereotypes have not lasted this long without foundation”

Anti semitism is a HUGE issue and this is a ‘top story’. However, for me the most horrifying and worrying aspect was the language, intimidation and attitude of the marchers. I thought the policeman showed remarkable patience and the Jewish gentleman stayed remarkably calm.

[Misc] Why Amazon, Netflix, Uber etc are all turning to sh*t

Another NSC thread about how we are all victims, how all businesses abuse us, how everything should be cheaper than it is and how we have been stripped of the ability to make our own choices and decisions!

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I have a close Estonian friend in his early 30s who has lived and worked in Norway and Spain for 10 years, speaks 4 languages and is extremely educated and basically ‘normal’, but whose parents consider themselves Russian. He consequently believes we in the west are being lied to about Putin and...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

History says it’s about winning the peace. Germany post WW1 became bitter and vengeful and this gave Hitler the platform to start WW2. The WW2 victors learned the lessons and helped rebuild Germany and thus it became a stable, democratic and peaceful nation. We can only hope that western...

    [Misc] Hoax?

When you look out to sea on a calm day, you can see why sailors used to think that if they sailed to the horizon they would fall of the edge. Still baffles me a bit to think the world is a sphere not flat at moments like that. (Ps. i know it’s not really flat!)
