I must say that Labour really aren't great at PR. WFP and IHT dominating the news - whereas this, broadly supported by all - I didn't even know it was passing through the Lords. Is this ALL the railway stuff - or just the tracks and so on?
Where are you getting your figures from? According to Government data there have been 33,562 so far this year. Pretty unlikely that 16,500 are suddenly going to arrive in December I would have thought?
Reminds me - I had lunch with a colleague from another county last week, his colleague once had to call on the Beckhams at Beckham Towers - he turned up in his council Fiesta, was beeped in the electric gates, parked next to the Ferrari, knocked on the door - which was answered by Posh Spice in...
Conversely - I always enjoyed Wigan awaydays. Decent pubs, proper locals - and no aggression. And great pies. It's a funny place though Wigan - one of the very few where I still felt like a southerner. I think it's because no-one actually moves to Wigan, so those that live there are born and...
You'd better get cracking then Lord Piltdown - make your estate pay :)
Top post just above this one - thanks. It's another of these things that were originally set up to help, and end up getting abused - then when they end them, it's generally not the abusers who actually get penalised, they...
Not always, no. But they are quite often allowed to build a bungalow on the farm for an agricultural dwelling for the child or parent (interchangeable) - which they then 'retire' into. (Although they rarely actually retire!) It's virtually impossible for most of us to simply build our own...
It will be the 'middling' guy that will be impacted the most.
The little guy, like most of us in the non-farming world, won't be affected by IHT anyway.
The big guy, as you say - will pay for a fiddle.
The middling guy (those with say £4m-10m farms) are the ones that will be affected and will...
Eh? Isn't this rather defeating their argument? The argument is that farmers cannot afford the IHT and it will make them all bankrupt - because they are struggling financially already. Yet the accusation is that Labour are targeting 'wealthy landowners'.....
Bit surprised by the number of us who were the first letter out. The 'wrong' word wouldn't have been one springing to mind normally (see what I did there!)

Yes - he has this in there.
Almost precisely what Reeves is doing!
They did mobilize twice before. Once when the fuel tax went up - funnily enough under Labour (Blair), and again as the 'Countryside Alliance' regarding hunting and other stuff. Funnily enough that was when Labour were in...
Sell the land, keep the house - never have to do a day's work again.
She also kept saying that it will only be £3m if the parents live for 7 years - which is not correct. That's about passing it on completely IHT free.
