I have a reliably good idea for creating a good atmosphere: playing well. Otherwise it’s all utter balls.
Or make all home fans coming to the game travel from 150 miles away with train beers.

When you are an away fan then you learn the songs easily enough. I imagine the same is true if you sit in the north stand.

If, however, like me you are a STH in another stand, who can't often get to away games then you rarely hear the newer songs clearly enough to learn the words.

That said, an official and therefore sanitised songbook would not help much, the best songs are often rude. Also I wouldn't try to read from an app whilst at the ground either.

An unofficial and therefore NSFW songbook would be of interest for me so I could know the current words. How often I would sing about being manually handled in Amsterdam is another thing. But I would like the option.

Not sure my views help improve the atmosphere at home matches though.

This.

I've sat in the East Stand since the Amex opened but in the early years regularly went to away games - this meant that although the ES only, in any numbers, joined in with 'Albion . . .' and 'Seagulls . . .", I did at least recognise a few of the songs coming from the North even if the words were unintelligible.

It was the so called 'tinpot' decision by the club to put the words to GOSBTS on the screen that got the majority of the stand singing along. It has been noticeable that since these have been removed the volume has decreased.

Who cares if some self entitled fans declare that words on the screen, song sheets or apps are 'tinpot' if these can help other fans to join in the fun and at the same time possibly add to the atmosphere in the stadium?

Appreciate a song book isn't the most effective idea, but good on them for trying to change things.

People are quick to shoot down ideas, whilst still continuing to complain about the atmosphere. In my experience, a lot of the people complaining, are the ones sat down in silence in the first place.

Lots of massive European teams have drums, flags, scarves etc, and those spectacles can be phenominal. Many of these ideas we shoot down becuase of old habits and preconceived ideas.

Yes, 250 small flags in the north stand won't be a match for the Yellow Wall in Dortmund, but you have to start somewhere. We shoot down ideas that lots of clubs utilise, because it won't be to the same scale straight away.

Just disappointed at how quickly some people in this thread have shot down someone trying to make a difference, with no real suggestions of themselves. Crossing your arms and complaining is only going to make matters worse.

The first point of call should be unifying both sides of the North Stand, so we don't have this silly divide in songs which has been going on for years.

TLDR - Being closed minded wont get us anywhere.
Agree with that.

Just ask on here. Within 5 minutes of your post, you'll have 3 different versions of the words - just pick your favourite.

Imho, as well as being a bit cringe a songbook will just encourage more of those long wordy songs that are awfully cleverly written (yes well done you) but never really catch on and kill the singing.

The North Stand has to be where the atmosphere starts. It's almost impossible to get singing going in the other stands when there are different songs going on (believe me I've tried).

Hopefully safe standing will encourage one group singing the same song at the same time. When that happens, the rest of the ground who do go away are able to join in, get a few others going, and the knowledge and singing spread from there.

Even in the ESL :lolol:

Fans need to practice for the away game at Palarse. "One man went to burn , went to burn the Selhurst , one man and his petrol bomb went to burn the Selhurst".

Worse than that, I would be inundated with 100 song ideas from the NSC poets society within the hour.

Yeah but none of us expect those ones to be actually sung... at an actual match... do they...?
It is a harmless enough hobby in itself, I just wish they would wait until after we actually sign the players. So often in the summer I look for new player gossip and every thread is just song ideas.

Anyway, happy Friday everyone!

Why do people on here keep repeating this utter bollocks?
The game against Bournemouth was a rip roaring, end-to-end contest between two teams competing for champions league football. Yet the atmosphere was as flat as a pancake, even when we were winning. In fact, it was probably as bad as any game this season. Bournemouth fans were louder than us when they were losing FFS.
Besides all that, the argument "we're only loud when we're winning" is completely pathetic anyway.

Back in 2001, my flat mate had an ajax season ticket, and I would use it if he wasn't going to go. One time I turned up and someone had put white handkerchiefs on the chair. I spoke no dutch at the time and had no idea what was going on, but when people stared waiving theirs I waved mine too. I only found out later this was the fans in this blocks way of telling Co Adriaanse that he should get his coat and leave.

The tenuous link between this story and this thread is that people will join in if they have no idea what's going on, so if they did the flags (like we had - I was in the home end, not sure if you had them in the away bit- in the Arena for ajax Brighton) they'll get waved and it'll look great.

It really isn't rocket science. Why does everything have to be over complicated? Fans just need to sing or at least feel like they can sing/shout without people around them getting shitty! Why was the Chelsea/Sheff Wed/Burnley games so different? The fans were actually singing in the West/East (maybe) Stands.
