Couple of mixed performances for my boy in the indoor league.

One of the games they were missing two regulars who just didn’t turn up. Thankfully the older brother of another team mate was there so ended up playing but he had no gear with him. Fielding in a six a side game with only 5 players makes things very tricky.

The other team ended up with a huge 104/3 off 12 overs but the boy was happy with a run out to get out a bloke who’d scored a half century against the club in a slam game over the summer for just 4.

Unfortunately things didn’t go well with the bat as he was bowled 3rd ball playing one onto his pads. A bit of a rally saw a 40 run partnership for the second wicket but we were soon down to 49/4. As we only had 5 players the other team agreed one of our players could bat twice so in came my boy again, they got the score up to a respectable 68 all out and he got 9 off 5 balls before being run out with the game well gone.

Another game and they’d drawn the late Tuesday night slot so starting at nearly 9pm wasn’t the best for a development team mainly made up of school aged teens. This was against another team from the town we are all based in so there is some friendly rivalry. We won the toss and elected to field but lost our captain to a finger injury after just 4 balls. This meant the other team could run up quite the score and even the courageous return of our captain after 5 or 6 overs couldn’t stop the onslaught as they finished on 112/2 with both openers retiring (league rules are players retire at 25 but can come back in if the other players are out). Thankfully my boy got another run out to keep his spirits up.

It was clearly a night for batting as although we started slowly both our openers ended up retiring too, the first time the boy has had to retire in the indoor league. Unfortunately the other batsman couldn’t score as well and my boy soon found himself back in with his opening partner again. The game was lost by this point we needed 50 off the last 2 overs but they managed to get 25 runs off those overs to lose by just 25 runs. The boy got 28 before he was run out which is his highest score.

In another bit of good news for him he might be loaned to the team he scored 28 against next season to play for their thirds if he isn’t playing for our second XI. I was scoring the game with their first XI captain and he was very impressed and one of the other players wicket kept against my son earlier in the summer season when he got his highest score so far of 46, so they know when he’s on his game what he has to offer.

So the boy finished his indoor season a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately his team finished bottom of their league with just one win, but considering it was a team made up of mainly Y9 and 10 school kids with a couple of adults they learnt a lot and you could see the improvement over the games, especially in the field.

From my sons point of view he had a decent season finishing third highest run scorer with an average of 17.25 and a highest score of 37 not out (which he scored in the final game). The top two runs scorers were the opener for the team that won it in second and our captain who topped the batting charts. On the bowling side, two of our young bowers finished joint second for wickets taken.

We are already back in winter nets and the boy also has the last few weeks of this winters MCC Foundation training in the next couple of weeks as well. It's looking like he will be a regular member of the second XI at his club this season, which should give him a lot of opportunity to improve further.

Anyone know much about Roffey CC?

Frankie comes home from his 6 months in Australia in 3 weeks 🙂 , and has signed up for Roffey in the Prem. Entirely up to him what he does as hes 18, and he does know quite a few of them up there from Sussex / BACA, but I have no idea what they're like as a club??

So, what about his time in Oz? If you're interested....

Hes had a blast, and I would thoroughly recommend it for any youngster looking to go over and play. We spent 3 weeks down there with him in January, and were delighted to see how much they thought of him....and how much he has embraced Aussie life. I reckon he will struggle to adjust being back here if it doesn't warm up soon!

As for the cricket - its been up and down (as all sport is), but his team won the 1st Grade One Day Grand Final a couple of weeks ago in which he played a major role. After winning the League, they are also on track to win the Two Day competition as well. The Redbacks have had a great season, and Frankie has loved it all. Such a wonderful experience - both in life experience, and sport.

Last weekend he probably turned in his best bowling stats of the season too....amazing.

Over the Summer he will do his Level 2 coaching badge, and hes been asked if he can coach the Sussex Pathway kids. Alexia Walker has said she will be in touch with him about maybe helping out with the Sussex Womens team as well. Hes starting a degree at Brighton in September, and will also hopefully be doing an internship with the S&C team at the County Ground. Busy, but good times ahead.

If anyone knows a cricketer who is keen on heading to Australia to play next winter - I can 100% recommend North Tamworth Redbacks. They have been incredible. Please dont hesitate to PM if you need any info.

Always been fine whenever I’ve played them - quite small ground but good facilities. Haven’t spend huge amounts of time there but seemed decent club feel. Had some incredible overseas over the years.

Would they take a 54 year-old, do you think?

Asking for a friend.
