Get a cat. The rats/mice will soon f*** off
Strictly speaking, and I say this from experience, they come back but dead and half eaten dumped on the doormat.

our cat brought a rat in, let it escape in the kitchen, it got under the units , behind the kick boards. Stayed there for ages until we sussed out why the cat food was missing.

The cat wasn’t at all bothered.

This did a good job, baited with bread and peanut butter. Only needed it down for one night.

This is what I have been using for a couple of years after rats were getting into the loft. Had none since. Just plug it in.

I used to work for countrywide.. they sold 2 types of mouse/rat traps..
The main warehouse had a huge problem as we stored animal feed.

They brought in the dogs every month.

We are only going by the droppings, it could be either I suppose. What's more likely to make it into a loft?

Rats up top- mice down low …. Bait box and bait …. Remove all access to any other food

If you find the entrance hole , mix up a bit of sand and cement AND bait to fill the hole 👍

Just be very careful…….its not as simple as just buying some poison & putting it down somewhere. There’s laws around it to protect other animals & wildlife, not only to stop them picking up bait but from eating the corpses of mice & rats. Think it has to be laid in sealed traps that the rat can’t escape from but not 100% sure on the ins & outs but pretty sure there’s plenty of info on line.

Had them in our shop as it backs on to a railway tunnel. Tried various things over the years but the best is poison. They eat it and then take it back to their nest where they feed their young. Refresh 2 or 3 times and then no more.
Traps - You then have to dispose of the trapped, maimed or dead animal. A few times, found a mouse leg in the trap where the animal had (almost) escaped.
