[Help] Dog on Dog attacks

Walking my 2 cocker spaniels today along a public road, on leads obviously, suddenly an Alsatian came running out of a business premises and attacked mine leaving an inch long open puncture wound in one of them. It happened so fast and out of nowhere that it was all I could do to kick/punch it to let go of my dog as it shock it’s head and sunken teeth tore my dogs flesh open leaving a nasty wound.

The business proprietor came running out and all the usual remarks eg he only wants to play, he hasn’t bitten etc which I wasn’t having any of it, the tosser: Said it needed to be *%**+€$ muzzled and on a lead, you can’t have a dog just sprinting out an open door and attacking anyone or anything just walking along the pavement.

Vet cleaned it up, remarkably no stitches (“a clean puncture, it’s best left to heal naturally”) albeit needs to have pain killers and anti B’s and as any pet owner knows, they’re not cheap. Won’t get any of that back. But more concerned mine is now scared for life, and will no longer be ok with big dogs in the park etc.

Just one of those things I know, nothing can do really just have to suck it up. But this is now the 2nd time an out of control “bred for attack/guarding” (or however you want to phrase that) breed has attacked me and mine in past year. Both times mine have been on a lead, we’re minding our own business walking along in a public place and another aggressive dog without the owner to be seen comes running up and attacks. Seems a lot of people with dogs about which they can’t control and/or have for status symbols. For the past 25 years nothing like this has happened to me and my faithful hounds. But now twice in 12months, last time it happened it also injured me. Both occasions the owners haven’t even apologised, just offered same stupid platitudes and walked off scolding their dogs.

Have I been unlucky? Or is it getting worse? What have other dog owners experienced?

About 8 years ago in Cornwall I was walking two little dogs when two alsatians and a Leonberger came out of the field nearby and killed one of them. One of the alsatians had three legs and was scary as hell when I tried to get involved but it was the leonberger that killed him, huge dog. Very sad.

Reported to police, found out that this group of dogs had been reported many times for dog atacks and had an order to be on a lead at all times. Owner just wasn't bothering to hold the other end of the lead.....

Think a destruction order was put on the three legged alsatian, but as far as I know the dogs were just dispersed to other parts of the country.

My mum’s cocker lost a big chunk of its ear to…I forget which breed exactly, it was about 20 years ago.

It wouldn’t let go, so she had to rip herself free, poor thing. This was despite my mum’s frantic efforts to get the dog to let go including, she claimed, sticking her finger up its ass. Owner stood and did nothing, then just walked away.

The dog healed up reasonably enough. My mum not so much, she’s still scared to walk her dogs to this day.

Definitely report to police. They should prosecute and you will be able to claim compensation if the owner is found guilty.
As others have said, next time it could kill another dog or, god forbid, a child.

What a horrible experience. For future reference to everyone , if a dog is attacking a dog or person and has a collar on. Grab and twist hard. Think MMA. The dog will let go before passing out.

I hope your dog has a speedy recovery and doesnt have any after effects from it mentally.

As for the other owner what a cock.

Thank you, and for the advice. Will try and remember although not sure if even had a collar on. Thinking about it this morning, it probably is a Guard dog. Makes sense for a small business. Not excusing the owner, it needs to controlled and muzzled if capable of running out onto the public road and attacking others! That or they need a fence!

I’ve heard if one rams a dry finger up a dogs arse it will also stop attacking.

Surely you will return to the business address with the bill
This may seem like sensible and natural thing to do, but they’ve no obligation to pay. In fact I know someone who did this and was then charged with harassment by the Police when the real villain lodged a complaint. This after my friends dog was killed by an aggressive ‘guard dog’ type. Life can suck, it’s not fair but we know this.

Dogs are excitable creatures. I have 2 GSD females one very friendly, the other is the new breed of 'reactive' dogs ...........those that like to run and bark at other dogs.
Neither have attacked anything other than their dinner , i have had comments along the lines of keep your dogs under control - even though it is their dogs running around mine.
A lot of people have dogs they cant control-big and small, what i find annoying is the new WOKE dog expert trainers that insist you dont have to be the alpha male with dogs - and they dont need a pack leader.----Utter nuts they are very dangerous people who know nothing . We all need boundary's and guidance , all dogs respond with being chastised and then showered with love to keep them balanced.
Compulsory cattle prod treatment of the owners is called for .
Just for the record i have some very nasty cats that are wild .

REPORT THE OWNERS having been bitten by a cockapoodle thing it really isnt funny and hurts like hell...good luck going forward to you and your dog

There are dog wardens you can contact and report to, working for the council

100% report that to the Police.

Recording the incident would be a crucial part of pursuing the vet bill cost (if you want to go that way too).

There aren’t bad dogs, just irresponsible owners
This is often banded about, in my head it really is how you define bad. To me if a dog is aggressive, likely to bite or kill someone, can't be trained not to bark all day, that's a bad dog. As a pet anyway. Some breeds are genetically different, its what they are. And irrespective of how responsible the owner they will always be, in respect of domestication a bad dog

Same with sharks, and members of the cat family.
