[Football] Are Southampton the worst Premier League team you've ever seen?

I came away yesterday thinking they probably were (and yes, I have not forgotten we contrived to draw against them earlier in the season).

Most poor sides have something in their favour. Ipswich aren't great at defending but can score goals. Wolves don't score loads but are reasonably solid at the back. Everton have survived for years by being enormously dull but a strong defensive unit, as did Palace when Pulis/ Allardyce/ Roy were in charge). Burnley were rubbish last season but could find a goal now and then, and Sheffield United (the only team I could think of who even come close to Saints) were largely useless but at least got stuck in like they cared, even if it meant nearly snapping Mitoma in half in the process.

Southampton, on the other hand, have no strikers even vaguely approaching mid table Championship quality, something resembling a supermassive black hole where a midfield should be, and a defence that wouldn't look out of place in the National league. Plus Aaron Ramsdale.

I couldn't believe how many times their centre halves (in name at least) stood twenty yards apart while we just ran past them, or knocked the ball casually through. I've not seen us stroll through defences like that since peak De Zerbi era. The funniest bit was when Bednarek went off injured and all their fans cheered sarcastically, I believe because they've been desperate to see Bella-Kotchap play, only for the new man to be even worse. And being even worse than Jan Bednarek is quite the accolade.

They'll beat Derby's record, if only because some team nearing the end of the season with nothing to play for will roll over and gift them the points, but my goodness, they are off the scale bad. I don't even see them doing well in the Championship next season, simply because they have so few players who look good enough to challenge the other top teams, and those who are (Dibling, Ramsdale) will leave anyway.

No because I only saw the Amex game and they weren’t even the worst team on the pitch that night

Probably

As an aside - noticed from your instagram that we missed you in the Belgian and Blues pre match by half an hour. Great place that. Planning to drop back later in the week to sample, a few with my elder lad.

The worst I can remember. The Villa relegated squad were also fun to watch as a Villa hater …. some home hammerings, comedy keepers, several sh1t managers in one season, hated players on huge contracts literally laughing and talking about their wealth, fans trying to get to them.

SheffU last season were also bloody awful, but with some thugs to put the foot in … Holgate :wanker: .

I think they were the poorest side I have seen us play in the Premier League. Saints had absolutely nothing to offer yesterday, they were beaten before they stepped on to the field, no heart whatsoever. If it were not for Ramsdale it would have been a record win for the Albion. So glad we just took care of business with no fuss yesterday.

They have to be up there, they were desperately poor. But we’ve played other teams who have been just as bad on the day, in much better league positions. I think overall when you look at their league position combined with the performance yesterday, you could well be right.

Statistics wise were Derby not the worst side in 2007/8. My mate took me up the arse to see them against derby and it was 5 I seem to recall ( they then lost by 6 at home to the arse)

I actually think the worst PL side I’ve seen were Luton in the opening game at the Amex last season. We were rusty, barely got out of second gear and yet absolutely battered them. They were woeful.

Fair play, they improved as they got used to the league.

Looks like all the promoted teams are going down for the 2nd season in a row.
It is looking harder to be able to stay up these days, now Wolves have picked up it has virtually sealed their fate.
Looking at the table I can't really see any teams who you could say look vulnerable for next season the promoted teams will have their work cut out again.

I would rather say, we made them look bad, and FH got his tactics spot on.

But a performance that clearly showed why they are bottom. Maybe when relegation is confirmed and that pressure is gone, they may put in some performances that give them hope for next season, as otherwise it could be back to back relegations.

I came away from yesterday’s match very happy but not ecstatic as when we beat Chelsea 3-0 last week. Saints were utterly woeful but saved from an even worse fate by Ramsdale. For me, we never got out of second gear, we didn’t need to.

They must be because this never normally happens to me, but I genuinely felt sorry for their fans yesterday. They are absolutely dog shìt. And they may have all got off early (who wouldnt) but it was a sellout. They've been watching that crap week in week out for the whole season. No one deserves that. Even those wurzels.

I said in a conversation last night the clubs that come up and expect to play passing football like they were in the championship are mad.
It’s only going to end one way Established PL sides will play them off the park all day long.
It’s maybe good for the managers profile not for the clubs.

I would put saints worse than that game. I wasn't surprised Luton were poor being 1st game back in top division for years whereas saints yesterday looked like they'd given up. Our wolves demolition under Roberto 6 nil also takes some beating!
