I think the reference is probably more that we are an ancient nation with much history attached than anything. The US is only about 300 years old (I think) in its present form. Obviously the land itself and indigenous inhabitation goes back much further. But I suspect history records little of it.
Architecture then?, or remains thereof.

@Eeyore thank you. I don’t mind the legitimate questions about Americans and our many faults. Just trying to provide a bit of context and clarity to the often overly-broad generalizations. I’m sure the same applies to the Americans’ views of Brits… although the educated here tend to admire your history, traditions, manners, culture, and politics more than the other way around… some of the stereotypes are still there- but the general sense is that Brits do the important things better than we do.
America is more varied than the UK though, is it not? Houston, versus New York versus Portland Oregon, versus Hicksville....
I think we all do what we think is best, and are sometimes right and sometimes wrong,
And we all tread the path between no-change conservatism and chaotic change radicalism.

I'm trying really hard to read your posts, without thinking they are just a tad racist - my earlier question was about WHY. Clearly crime happens in the most deprived areas, often populated by blacks and hispanics. WHY are the blacks and hispanics in the most deprived areas, which ofen have the highest levels of crime? Do they only commit crime because they are black or hispanic, or because for a multitude of reasons they live deprived lives?
I believe it’s, as you state, “because of a multitude of reasons” - mostly poverty and lack of societal stability- poor schools, no churches, bad neighborhood, lack of community services, etc.

It’s quite the opposite of racism- My point is that Blacks are much more likely to be the VICTIMS of gun violence - as well as the perpetrators. This never makes the headlines! Too often, at least here in the US, the media only focus on the Black person who committed the crimes. (And when the victim is white, it goes straight to the front page) The US public never hears about the underlying reasons why “Black on Black” crime is so destructive- let alone the root causes.

I suspect that it is due in large part to the lack of two parents in the home where the mother is also working low wage jobs. I would bet that this is a better indicator than race. Two parent homes in the suburbs have the lowest crime rates - regardless of skin color.

America sadly just does not seem to have the time to discuss causes- only the results.

I hear what you are saying, and appreciate it isn’t about YOUR racism, but racism is at the heart of all you are saying. It’s about how people are treated and their expectations and others expectations of them.

I was planning hols in a nice resort in the Caribbean (again) this year but I’ve decided that there’ll probably be too many potentially dangerous political conversations in the bars and pools, so I’ll more likely be heading east instead.
Our last Caribbean cruise on an Oceania ship ( posh rich Americans) was rammed full of trump supporters just after the election and we spent most evenings at meal times trying to avoid politics.

on the Celebrity Eclipse ( normal fun loving Americans) the two weeks before we had people coming up to us apologising for his election win saying “ please don’t think we are all like this”

wouldn’t think of cancelling my holiday because of them, but you can spot them a mile off and just avoid conversations

There seem to be two main points to this thread. One, it's wrong to be racist; two, Americans are awful people. Isn't there a contradiction?

(FWIW, I've been to America lots of times - it's hard to see baseball anywhere else - and found most of the people to be very friendly. Though I do spend more time in the midwest. New York and Philadelphia were a touch more iffy, especially on the subway at night.)

No doubt a wise move by the powers that be.

Sly antisemites thought they could post at will, nsc belonged to them ;) .

I guess some prefer to pretend the horrors Israel is perpetuating on a daily basis isn't happening with our support.

An example being an Israeli newspaper just revealed that the Israeli army forced a Palestinian elderly man well into his 80s to scout buildings with an explosive cord tied around his neck.
He was later shot dead along with his wife.
