Quite interesting. Shows how far we have come recently, very slowly climbing the table from a pretty lowly historical position. We are going to have to stay in the PL for a long time to go up much further though.

Confess I had never heard of Glossop North End

I would have that top 19 plus Forest instead of Burnley as my kind of best and biggest league, which highlights mosty how far Bolton have sunk.
Interesting how close us, Brentford and Bournemouth are, and shows how well all three clubs have been doing.
Feels like a shift from north to south worthy of a sociological study.

I think we'll stay in 47th place for a few seasons. Unfortunately, Palace will be moving up a place soon. Bury that high though? When?

I saw this a little while back and was surprised at just how big the gaps between the lesser sides (us included) was. Another 3 seasons just to get above Bradford!.

Makes a bit of a mockery of the concept of top ten being 'the new normal' for us.
My memory isn't what it was, but it isn't that poor

Isn't it more a reflection of:

1) The league originally being northern based

2) A lot of Southern clubs didn't join until 1920

3)Only two divisions until 1920 when divs 3 north and south were introduced

4)It was only one up one down from Div 3 south until 1959

5)It was only two up two down until the 70s.

6)Play offs weren't introduced until 1987.

I'd bet that the increase in top flight southern teams started in the 70s with three up three down and really got going after the play offs were introduced.

For example we didn't get promoted from div 3 south until we won it in 1958. If it was top 3 we would have been promoted in 1937. If the play offs existed we'd have qualified for them 17 times with our first possible promotion coming in 1923.

I think it's that greater mobility rather than any sociological or economic factors that have caused the 'rise' of southern teams and 'decline' of northern ones.

My favourite stat from these type of tables is that Stoke conceded a goal after 10 minutes in their first game of 1888-89 inaugural season of the league....and have had a negative goal difference ever since. 😜
That, if true, is an incredible stat!

You see, this is why I'm a firm supporter of the 'Football only started in 1992' brigade. We're much higher up if you ignore all the early seasons, especially those when it was just a northern thing. :)

(Good to see Bradford Park Avenue though!)

This is great, so yes, lots of factors.

I do think though (and this could be some anchoring bias) that over the entire footballing pyramid there seems to be a shift to southern clubs. Looking at the non leagues for instance, feels like a lot of the clubs taken on by money men are more southerly clubs. Probably just an incorrect hot take though.

With all due respect, it's disappointing that we can't seem to beat teams like Glossop North End.

This is the all time Premier League table.
Will probably overtake Charlton, Wimbledon this season. And (probably) Sheff Weds, Norwich, Coventry next....so not far off breaking into the all time Top 20.
