This is the sort of debate I was after. You’re right, last night we went into a five out of possession with Minteh filling in at right back and Veltman tucked in with one of the CBs pressing. It worked very well and will do against teams with quick players who want to play football. But pressing isn’t Dunk’s game.Dunk’s never had as many injuries as this season. Made it difficult for him.
Last night in particular was a tactical shift that seemed to accept we’ve been having problems behind our fullbacks. My feeling being that it would have worked for Dunk last night as it did for VH and Webster.
Difficult to say we’re better without him as we set up so differently to other games last night.
Even then we made some errors that luckily went unpunished by Chelsea. It would be hard on Webster to be dropped but that is great competition for places to have. I wouldn’t go writing Dunk off just yet.
Admittedly from my sofa, but from comments on here and what I saw, to say he was awful for the first half hour seems very harsh.This. It would be incredible if it didn't happen EVERY SINGLE TIME after we win or lose a game...
But this is a new low to start a thread about a scapegoat for our
previous losses...!
I really like Adam Webster. He is wholehearted, smiley and a decent player. But he was awful for the first half hour last night. He had several opportunities to play the type of pass that Dunk has mastered so brilliantly but fluffed them all. He also couldn't defend one-on-one at all during that period. Chelsea could easily have scored a goal, gone on to win, and the sage NSC narrative would be 180 degrees different today.
Didn’t Igor get injured?Yes. Dunk really shouldn’t have got back in when Igor and Van Hecke were doing well. It’s a no brainer that he doesn’t get back in now. His days as a regular starter should be done sadly.
He is struggling this season and is picking up injuries but hopefully he can be lifting the FA Cup at Wembley - he deserves that.
Adam was only 30 this January. Not twilight yet, but injuries are a problem. We need them both, neither likely to play a whole season as they are approaching twilight of their careers. Could use them in tandem with JPVH.
That wasn't the question though. We defended really deep most of the time. Dunk would have been fine.
There has been a lot going on with injuries and tactics to lay a run of poor form at the feet of one player.Webster’s performance last night and against Arsenal was better than anything Dunk has done for a year or so. Dunk CANNOT come straight back in. It’s what kicked off our awful form last time.
Dunks consistently error prone . . .it's part of the job.Webster is great but can be inconsistent.
Ideal scenario, they both battle it out for one place.
I agree with this.We defended really deep most of the time. Dunk would have been fine.

I think what he perhaps lacks a bit from younger Dunk days he has more in experience, calmer head etc. As others have said he is still a very good PL CB with a lot to offer. This is the sort of debate I was after. You could also perfectly well make a case for his passing and set piece defending being needed against “lesser” sides.
Overall though I don’t think he’s close to the player he was, and I’d rather make that point after a win he wasn’t involved in than as a reaction to a defeat he was.
It would be the third time in the last 9 months or so I have said "(whisper it) we are better without him" were I to say we are better without him.I can’t be arsed to check the data but in gut feeling I think we defend better without our club captain than with.
Do you agree? Do you want to dig the data? For me, if all our centre backs are fit then LD shouldn’t start.
Thanks WZ, another sign of me being in my twilight years, rather than Adam.
