if you put something in the exact centre (is this the same as extreme centre) they balance dont they?

Surely the best of measure of something's bias are examples?

@n1 gull over to you?
Extreme centrist doesn't give balanced views at all

Everyone either becomes far right or hard left

An example is the 'hate speech' laws they are advocating.
They claim to be inclusive but if you have a hard left or far right point of view you might get the law knocking on your door with a NCHI, or your social media account removed etc..

“abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds.”

You can be “hard left or far right “ and not be abusive and threatening.

Of course but we already have laws for abusive threatening behavior as we do for libel

Who judges what is and what is not acceptable?

Toby Young from the Free Speech Union gives detailed explanations on the Winston Marshall podcast

He’s much more eloquent than me but it’s an interesting listen if you to want know how the new laws will affect free expression

How does everyone either become far right or hard left? People can't stay centerist or moderate left or right? I don't think this is true.

Could you post a link to the laws you are referring to so i can read what they say and get the context?

Edit: is this the changes from last year? I haven't heard them discussing them but they seemed okay to me, what parts are you concerned about?

To answer your question, if there is suitable evidence , ultimately a jury will judge what is, and what isn’t, acceptable. I can live with this.

If you want to say something controversial, choose your words carefully and be polite. Surely this in the correct path to be on? I’m more than happy to have a legal framework in place to encourage this.

Once Dolphin, Now Seagull
The point in hand was that taking lectures from a nation that appoints an unelected car salesman to oversee billions of dollars of cuts in public spending, threatens alliance allies with invasion if they don't hand over land to them, has a leader who led an insurrection against a democratically elected government and pardoned the insurgents, appoints judges based on political affiliation and completely ignores their judgements anyway, is in no position to lecture others on what a failing democracy is.
Yeah but apart from that what have the Romans ever done for us

This Toby Young ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toby_Young

In 2015 Young wrote an article in advocacy of genetically engineered intelligence, which he described as "progressive eugenics".

he was briefly a non-executive director on the board of the Office for Students, an appointment from which he resigned within a few days after Twitter posts described as "misogynistic and homophobic" were uncovered.

In 2020, press regulator Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO) found Young to have promoted misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic

He wrote for The Sun on Sunday, the Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, and The Spectator.

I think I'll give it a miss cheers

Wikipedia always a reliable research tool

Shame you don’t give it a listen to get another opinion but of course that’s your choice 👊

Wikipedia is good isn't it?

Toby Young really is a nasty little runt. Wish I could find the article he wrote about how not having a lot of work on he discovered that his children were actually not all that bad to spend time with after all. I had to keep checking it wasn't a spoof whilst reading.

That's the comment of a pure Polidroid. Especially as you don't need to be smarter than Donald Trump to be a better person than him. How miss George Bush.
The idea that George Bush was unintelligent was a media-driven narrative he was a graduate of Yale and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

I'm really finding it hard not to start detesting everything American at the moment. I'm normally very rational, but the way Trump, Vance, Hegseth etc are acting - its insane. Its so hard not to tar them all with the same brush, even for the most fair minded, and think f*** you America, and f*** you Americans, wtf have you done. I can't be the only one thinking this? Surely most of Europe is now starting to think this way? What a dire state of affairs we suddenly find ourselves in. Christ
Your comment laming an entire nation is no different than the kind of hatred Trump pushes. Broad-brush vilification of an entire people, based on the actions of certain politicians or extremists, is exactly the tactic he and others use to divide and inflame.

If we’re going to talk about countries that have inflicted harm on the world, Britain has done more damage than most. The British Empire colonized a quarter of the planet, shaped economies, governments, and borders in ways that still cause conflict today, and left behind a legacy of exploitation and division that nations are still dealing with.

This.

Half my family are American AND active Democrats.

This kind of tarring of a whole nation of people is limited thinking at best and a little offensive to those of us who‘s relatives straddle both sides of the Pond.

I pulled up someone last week for saying the same about Jews and another for presuming all Palestinians are terrorists.

One of the unfortunate polarising effects of political dialogue that uses social media as a source of information and opinion.

Look for the nuances and eliminate the stereotypical thinking otherwise we feed the narratives of intolerance and hatred - elements that populist extremism thrives on.
