[Misc] Strangest thing you've had nicked...

When i was backpacking Australia in 2013, we checked into a hostel in Surfers Paradise. It was a 6 person room, but only myself and a buddy in the room upon check-in. We were there 2-3 nights, and it was just us until the last night we were there. We'd gone out for for food, come back to pack to leave the next day and I noticed my shoes were missing.

Upon further inspection, my friend had some jeans missing. Then we noticed a set of car keys, and a brochure on one of the beds.

Long story short, these two Aussie guys working on a remote farm had come into Surfers for the night to get pissed up, but a lot of bars require closed toe shoes and long pants on. Reception checked CCTV, saw the guys walk in the room, and walk out with my shoes and friends jeans on.

They moved us to a new room, and locked the key card out so they guys had to go to reception when they came back that night, so they could kick them out.

Anyway, i got my revenge. Before changing rooms, i took his car keys, opened the balcony doors and launched them as far as i could throw them into the pool of the neighboring hotel.

Complete house renovation, new boiler, cylinder, copper tube, all boxed ready to fit next few days.

As i leave house last, my job is to set alarm but it wouldn't pip at me despite few attempts so locked it up only.

Next day (nothing nicked..) I asked client why that might be, with him saying 'think you're an idiot, you just touch this/press that and it goes.. oh.. weird.. the outdoor box should make a noise ..OH f***.. someones nicked the alarm box' (2nd floor wall)..!

That night, a family member had to sleep in a cold empty building site to keep watch..

That feels like overly harsh retribution to be honest, for someone borrowing your shoes.

TV, Remote control, Albion shirt, England shirt and my wife´s hair curlers.

When we moved to Malta we left 23 boxes to be shipped from our old house.
When the shipment arrived those things were missing! Sky box and remote were still there so they probably already had that!
Had a long drawn out argument with the shipping company before it was settled.

I had my bike pump nicked in Southwick Square. I was a bit insulted - as they left the (unlocked) bike, presumably thinking it was worth less than the pump.

And we had our Austin Maxi broken into outside our house one evening. The person was obviously disturbed in their actions and ran off as we actually gained a tool kit!

Reminds me of the time back in the day when I was so disgusted with another abject home performance, I nailed my Albion season ticket to a tree.

When I went back the next day, somebody had nicked the nail.

The bath was in minutes, even the builders said it had broke their record.

The fridge was taken out for AO to collect the next morning. Man in a car pulled up and asked if he could have it. I said no, but presumably he came back and stole it anyway.

I left some wheels outside the house for a minutes and they were gone very very quickly.

I've never had anything nicked but Mrs Wz has a bit of form (although not in the last 40+ years). I remember her passing a nice wooden toilet seat she had taken a liking to out the window of a pub in Brighton and she also got the staff in a Chinese restaurant in Glasgow to hold the door open while she walked out with their rubber plant.

I think it may be genetic as Mrs Wz was admiring the beer glasses we had in a bar when skiing a few years back. As we walked back to the chalet Miss Wz pulled said glasses out of her snow shoes. Mrs Wz said 'I never saw you take them' to which Miss Wz replied 'Dddhhuuur Mum, that's the whole idea of nicking'.

Luckily, I'm only related by marriage :blush:

I often leave old radiators outside properties I’m working in, saves me getting rid of them if they are collected.

In a small French ski village, we all had our rental ski poles nicked, as did others. Whilst the far, far more expensive skis, weren’t. This was about 10 years ago.

Anyone here think that just Brits are blinkered when criminal profiling? The French resort director instantly blamed it on “The Romanians” :lolol:

. With no evidence, he guessed they were gathering them for a job lot export to their ski resorts.

A plastic pencil case containing some spanners and screwdrivers stolen from my car. I assume the thief must have seen it and though there was gas in it. The car was parked outside a police station in Nimes, France.

Having seen that, I do remember as a teenager (early/mid 70s) in Portslade/Mile Oak/Southwick etc, going round all the new flats/houses/conversions etc in the morning, picking up any old metal going and taking it to a scrap metal dealers on the Mile Oak road.

A few green folding beer tokens and we'd settle into the George in the Old Village for an underage lunchtime session :drink:

Our house was burgled many years ago and we had a lot of stuff stolen. The weird thing was I had a lot of old white sport socks that I used to wear under my club socks when playing football and rugby. Most were stained and had holes in the toe. They were stored in a drawer in my bedroom along with a bunch of brand new black socks still in their original packaging. You've guessed it, the thieves took all the white socks but none of the black ones.

I really don't care, maybe he learned a valuable lesson not to touch other peoples belongings. It's the rule of hostels, you have to trust you can leave your stuff around without someone taking it or going through your belongings.
