Can you explain to me what exactly this is all about?

I only ask because I’m unsure what side she is really coming down - the Irish, the British or the whole Troubles and the pointlessness of indiscriminate killing. I think it was about a specific IRA bombing?
It was written in response to the IRA bombing of Warrington town centre on 20 March 1993.

Most of Billy Bragg, Most of New Model Army, and quite a lot of Midnight Oil. Too many to choose from!

Here's a recent one, and I don't need to explain the context.

Three great musical artists that have stuck to their socio-political principles from day one, eschewing commercial success to get their messages out there. Long may they, and others like them, continue to do so.

Lancing
A tune composed by pianist Oscar Peterson which once words were added became an anthem for Freedom Movements world wide.

I saw Midnight Oil in Kuranda in 1991 - they were fantastic. We went to Wittenoom Gorges and spent the night in the hostel there as well - which was a fascinating ex-town, in it's death throes even then. We went for a walk and had a lift from a local in his 30s who took us home for a couple of tinnies. I asked him what the asbestos was like - he just looked down onto his carpet, bent down - picked up a piece of blue asbestos 'there you go mate' he said.

I suspect he's dead now.

This song is about that mine.

Some really good songs on here. Just for info. "The World Turned Upside Down" song about the Diggers was actually written by Leon Rosselson. Bragg's version is definitive, but here's the original:

I have to add Clive Gregson and Elvis Costello's heart-breaking 'Shipbuilding', inspired by news reports that the Falklands War could lead to much needed jobs because of the potential reopening of Shipyards. Costello's version is very good, has his usual bite and Chet Baker playing trumpet on it, but the first version they made with Robert Wyatt on lead is fragile, haunting and truly pathetic.
