Around that time the North Laine area was pretty grim
We lived in Foundry St briefly late 70's . . .it was. . I was only a kid.

Victorian properties were largely neglected and many were cheap rentals until they became fashionable and restorable in the 80's . . . . Laura Ashley made a mint out of my mother alone!

6-16 for me and exactly the same CBH
Had very little but was the best place to grow up
Not Grim at all it was f’ing brilliant
Brighton never looked grim back then, I definitely remember parks and the seafront were definitely tidy.
Not sure I would want to live in the area where I grew up now, it’s full of student housing

Fast forward to 1976, and a German tourist took these pictures of some of the nicer parts of Brighton:

Thats how I remember Brighton as a kid . . . .

My old pal Chris did the magic window clean thing on the pier forecourt in 77, and probably 76. Can't see him in the pic. He now owns a hotel up the second road (I think) on the right of the Years.
I didn’t buy one of them but I did buy a gadget to squeeze the juice out of an orange from a similar chap on the pier forecourt. Never got it to work.
Spent most of 1976 on the beach there and on the pin ball machines in the arcade at the top of the beach. Had to walk home many times having spent my bus fare.

The photos are grim and purposely so, even though it was a time of the Three Day Week, and rubbish piled up in the streets as a six year old it was just the way things were. A time of innocence and fun.

The photos make me feel sentimental and a couple of them bring back special memories. I went to Middle Street School which served the most delicious school lunches and was just a lovely school, it looks like a prison now unfortunately. I lived in St. James’s Place for 5 years, we used to play football in front of the NALGO Club and we had a street party for the Silver Jubilee.

Thanks for sharing, a lovely stroll down memory lane.

For the Silver Jubilee, we went to the Hungry Years early (pubs open all day) and then jumped off the end of the Palace pier about 5ish IIRC. Proper traditionalists but it was bloody cold

I remember taking a 'posh bird' upstairs in Vassos. She smoked Sobranie cocktails and they charged me £1.80 for two f***ing coffees

Never one to near a grudge :lolol:

Do you know when that stopped being the Hungry Years. I went to uni in Brighton in the mid 90s and I seem to recognise the font - but don't know if my mind is playing tricks on me. And I wonder what the whole roofed building in the background is?
Not sure. I stopped going in the early 80’s when I moved down the coast to Pompey to study. Then came back and got married so never went again!

I Was only 5 . . . Nearly 6 . . . . there was a street party in shoreham where we lived. Queens place!

As soon as the parents has had a few drinks, we did a few lines of butterscotch angel delight, downed a few bottles of Corona cherryade, then sneaked up the downs, to go hang gliding . . . .in the dark.

It was the 70's man!

Summer of 78 and 79 I worked on the deck chairs. Did all the pitches except the pier.
The topless (and occasionally bottomless  ) female 'scandi' students on West Street beach were a bit of a distraction.

Just trying to look up some of where some of the photos are taken, found some details of Howells Alms Houses in George St Brighton.

My granny worked in a coffee shop on George street in the 1960s. Saved from the alms house by moving in with her sister in 1929 after her husband died. My mum was a year old. Tough times.

Looking back, it was seriously grim. Moulsecoomb, Mile Oak, Whitehawk, Fishersgate, Coldean you had to be careful at night if you're not 'from these parts'. Far more likely to get mugged than get a latte on the famous Brighton seafront after 6 o'clock.

But, as a teenager in the 70s, it was f***ing brilliant
Coldean? Excuse me!!! If you were able to get past the Hikers Rest unscathed, it was a haven of tranquillity. First line of defence was the severe looking woman who ran the chip shop at the bottom of Park Street. She took no nonsense from anyone.
