Half of North Laine had been knocked down in preparation for the flyover they were planning, I think that horrendous plan finally got nixed in about 1976. You can still see in places like Upper Gardner Street where newish houses have since been built in these gaps.

Or the central mono-rail station to the University.
To be honest I'd never heard of this flyover, are you joking or true. Where was it going to run?

From Preston Circus to North Street I believe. I think planning officer Ken Fines pulled the plug on it - it would have entailed the demolition of Kensington Gardens and surroundings - and so he’s commemorated with a plaque on the wall of Infinity Foods. The car park in Church Street is the only part of the plan to be implemented, I think.

And from the same website, here's Freddie Goodwin in 1970 with some motivational posters for the dressing room:

Wow does that look grim. And we think it's bad now, although he may have taken the worst pictures he could find. Nothing of the seafront or piers.
This. Even today, photographers are more likely to take pictures of 'interesting' scenes - like run down bits / signs and so on. A nicely tended smart terrace just isn't that photogenic really.

It's funny looking at pictures of prim ladies and gents in their pinnies, frocks and overcoats shopping normally on St James Street.

I wonder what they'd make of the experience today.

I like the picture of the woman sitting in the cubby hole checking her phone: "Resting in peace"

Fast forward to 1976, and a German tourist took these pictures of some of the nicer parts of Brighton:
