A loan is very, very unlikely for any player with just a few months left on his contact and, presumably, little to no evidence of them committing to a new deal.

I repeat what I said a few hours ago, McConville may turn out to be the real deal but, at his age, it's a coin toss. I'll admit to having never heard of him before November and I suspect most of our fans who aren't keenly focused on the youth setup are similar.

So, given what I think are not unreasonable assumptions about his situation, a sale now to pocket some cash and lock in the chance of future gains via a sell-on clause was really the only viable option.
But then (like a number of signings) you could also argue that Cashin is a toss-up, more experience granted, but in a struggling championship team.
As per my response above, the rest I get, this one I’m struggling with.

Let us also not be sniffy about money here. For about the first 100 years of the Albion's existence, the £900,000 we received for Mark Lawrenson was almost double the money we'd ever received for a player.

Then we sold Zamora and (lolz) Virgo for £1.5 million each and thought we were on a different planet. Then Ulloa for £8 million, and White, Cucurella, Mac Allister, Caicedo etc.

I'm not sure the fact we've sold a load of players for massive fees in the last decade means we should turn up our noses at £1.5 million rising to £2.75 million for a lad who's barely played 20 minutes of football for us and who represents pure profit.

But if McConville has indicated he won't be signing any further contracts with the Albion, what is the course of action you suggest the club should be taking now?

He's made over 100 senior appearances. Of course, he may not make the cut at PL level but he has proven qualities.

Not many of our players go from the U21's to first team. Before Hinshelwood, who was the last one?

Shame we didn't send McConville out on loan.
There's usually around one a season in recent years, in terms of players from our U21s who make it to be first team regulars (some after loans). That's a good hit rate for the Premier League, although their success after making our team has been mixed.

Alzate, White, Connolly, Sanchez, Ferguson, Hinshelwood.

This season there hasn't been anyone, but that's the exception. Maybe Beadle, Moran or Rushworth next season could step up.

At a lower level, my point is that it is the same coin toss, albeit with more experience that McConville is. Plenty of players look good in a lower division, see Danny Cullip but can they make the step up?

Cashin may be brilliant, and let’s hope so, because both CBs were dreadful Saturday.

Not arguing about any of this - U21s usually get released or moved on to EFL or equivalent. No problem with that, it's life. Some of us are genuinely disappointed about McConville though. Life's a bitch..................................

Rushworth already appears to be our number two.

I'm disappointed, but I'm not sure what the options were if he didn't want to commit any further to the Albion.

I can't find the original article on the club site, but the last record I can find of when he last signed a new deal, it ran to Jun2 2025 with no mention of any options for longer.

So is coaching the problem at U21s if the promising talent is not developing?
The U21s are currently 3rd (out of 26) in PL2.

We have several very exciting lads, including the 16 year old England age group regulars Howell and Simmonds who have taken to U21 football swimmingly.

But I would have thought that most of these lads in this group are more likely to go out on loan next year than step straight up, given their ages and competition for places. Howell and Simmonds maybe even the season after that, can you send out U18s on professional loans?

Having said that I didn't expect Hinsh to make the squad last year.

Yes, but re: McConville vs. Cashin, we're punting £1M for our boy going to the Championship against £(how many?)M for a Championship player coming in (who I hope becomes the new younger Dunk with knobs on) - but we'll have to wait and see.

Albion U-21s are back in action on Tuesday (if they can find any players) as they travel to Luton Town for their final U-21 Premier League Cup Group G fixture. The situation is simple - a draw or a win and they will proceed to the round of 16 as one of the best 7 runners-up (from 9 groups). However, if they lose they will miss out and Luton will progress in their place.

Well exactly, that’s all we can do, but this is my only disappointment in this window.
